ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3069　30 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (528 MISPI - 0156)　16 January 1951

PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was farmer prior to entering the service. PW was cooperative but of below average intelligence and had a very poor memory. Information obtained is not considered reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

PW entered the Chinese Nationalist Army May 48 and assigned to the 60th Army, 182nd Div, 544th Regt. After serving for approx 16 months, PW was captured by the Chinese Communist Army at HUPEI (湖北) and was integrated into the 50th Army, 128th Div, 224th Regt, 3rd Bn, 3rd Co. O/a 24 Sep 50, the 128th Div crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG (XE1842) and entered KOREA. After crossing the river, PW's unit marched only at night and arrived at a river (probably the IMJIN River) near the 38° parallel on u/k date. PW's unit crossed the river and advanced to HAN River. O/a 8 Jan 51, PW's unit crossed the HAN River and advanced south. Enroute, PW became a straggler due to fatigue from marching. PW continued to travel towards south, looking for his unit, and arrived at SUWON (CS2527) o/a 10 Jan 51. From SUWON, PW continued towards south and after approx 5 days of marching he arrived in vic of HABUNG-NI (CS2808) and hid in an air raid shelter. There he was joined by two other CCF stragglers. At approx 151530 Jan 51, they heard disturbance at the entrance and finding U.S. soldiers outside they voluntarily surrendered themselves.

50th Army consisted of the 128th, 150th and an u/k Div.

128th Div consisted of 224th, 225th, and 226th Regt.

Each Regt consisted of 3 Rifle Bns.

Each Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and a HMG Co.

When departing ANTUNG, the 128th Div became known as the 1st Bn; the u/k Div as the 2nd Bn; and the 150th Div as the 3rd Bn. The three Regts in the 128th Div became known as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Cos. The three Bns assigned to each Regt became known as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Sqds. Cos were called Plats.

The HMG Co had 4 HMGs, 3 pistols, and approx 10 rifles.

Each Rifle Co had 9 HMGs, 3 60mm mortars, and u/k number of rifles and handgrenades.

Communication was maintained between the Bn Hq and lower echelons by runners. Mounted couriers were used between Bn Hq and higher echelons. PW stated he did not observe any telephones or wireless equipment.

No tanks or arty pieces were observed by PW.

Morale of PW's unit was low due to lack of food, clothing, and constant air strikes by UN aircrafts. Many men of his unit wanted to desert but are unable to do so because of strict surveillance by their officers. PW picked up several UN leaflets after crossing the 38° parallel but did not pay any attention to them as he could not read the contents. All men in the Co were instructed by their Plat Ldrs and Co CO not to read such leaflets. PW did not hear any broadcasts from airplanes. Mail arrived when his unit was located in CHINA but none arrived after entering KOREA. Tobacco rations were only available among officers and that the men obtained tobacco from Korean farmers.

Food was procured locally. The men were fed 2 meals per day of rice and millet.

Present amount of ammo available in the HMG Co u/k to PW. To the best of his knowledge, his Co did not receive any additional ammo since entering KOREA.

No additional replacements were received since crossing the YALU River.

PW was instructed by his Co CO to put a white arm band on left arm in case he lost contact with his unit.

PW observed approx 8-9 U.S. PsW approx 2 months ago at an u/k location. They were guarded by NK troops and were heading north.

PW had no knowledge regarding the use of narcotics and drugs by CCF troops prior to or since entering KOREA.
