2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to entering the service. 19 Jan 51, PW deserted his unit at INCHON and travelled along the RR tracks towards SUWON. In vic CR177977, he was stopped by elements of the 29th BIB and apprehended for not being able to show any Identification Card. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence, however, information was limited. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
PW heard from another soldier that the 47th Div consisted of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th Regts. No other details regarding the organizational structure of the 47th Div were known to PW.
PW did not know the code name for his unit, but heard the following code names being used during the past two months: (unit designation of code name u/k)

Casualties of the Medical Section were as follows:
1 – Typhoid case
1 – Frostbite case
1 – Stomach ailment case
1 – Killed by a land mine
1 – Psycho case
On 17 Jan 51, at KYONGDUN-NI (Vic of INCHON BS9049), two (2) casualties from UN air strikes were brought in from the 3rd Regt. PW started that until he deserted his unit, there were approx 100 casualties from UN air strikes from the 3rd Regt and other u/k units.
1 out of every 4 men in the 3rd Regt was armed with a rifle. The men without rifles were issued 3 hand grenades each.
The Medical Section had scissors, tweezers, iodine, mercurochrome and aspirins.

Unit Assignment and Intentions:
PW heard from another NK soldier, o/a 7 Jan 1, that the 47th Div was to remain at INCHON for approx two months. Tactical mission of the 47th Div u/k to PW.

Dispositions:
The 47th Div Hospital was located in vic South of YONGDUNGPO (CS1454) (exact location n/k).
The 3rd Regt dispensary was located in KYONGDUN-NI (approx 4 km SE of INCHON).
O/a 11 Jan 51, approx 2,000 CCF troops were observed in SEOUL in vic of the South Gate.
At KYONGDUN-NI, PW heard that the 17th NK Div moved to SUWON (CS2527) at the same time when the 47th Div moved to INCHON.
PW observed approx 700 NKA troops in INCHON, 14 Jan 51, transporting rice by ox-carts heading towards SEOUL.

Communications:
Telephones were used as means of communication and telephone wires were laid on the ground.
Ox-carts were used in transporting food and ammo. Trails and roads wide enough for the carts were used and travelling was done at night and during the early morning hours

Personalities:
WON, Ki Ho (Phonetic), Jr Lt, Plat Ldr – Med Sect, 3rd Regt, 47th Div.

Armor:
PW did not observe any tanks.

Artillery:
PW did not observe any arty pieces nor has he any knowledge of any arty units.

Morale:
Morale of the communist members in PW’s unit were high. All other non-communist soldiers had low morale. Cense of low morale u/k to PW.

Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the NKA on 30 July 50 at CHUNGCHONG PUKDO and was sent to KANGDONG (■…■36) where he received one month of basic training with the 6th Co, 2nd Bn (Regt and Div n/k), Upon completion of training, the 2nd Bn (500 men) proceeded to ONJONG (KE4743) vic SIMANJU (■D2426) and SAK■■■ (KE7372) arriving on n/k date. At this location, PW received 10 days off medical training. Training consisted of bandage practicing and use of mercurochrome and iodine. Upon completion of training, PW was assigned to the 47th NK Div, 3rd Regt, Medical Section. The 47th Div departed ONJONG and traveled through mountain trails and entered SEOUL from the East Gate (date n/k). The 47th Div proceeded towards INCHON but PW AND 2 other ox-cart drivers remained behind with their ox-carts to wait for the HAN River to freeze. After waiting for approx 10 days, PW and the other 2 crossed the river and travelled to INCHON and met the 47th Div. After remaining at INCHON for approx 4 days, PW deserted his unit on ■raning of 19 Jan 51 and while enroute to his home he was captured by the North ■…■erland ■…■iliers, in vic of CR■77977 on 21 Jan 51.

4. GENERAL:
Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was procured locally. The amount was sufficient although he ate only 2 meals per day.
Ammo supply was believed to be insufficient. Source of ammo supply u/k. Source of medical supplies u/k.

Replacement:
Personnel of overstrength units under the 47th Ldr were transferred to understrength units.
Wounded personnel were ■…■nated to the rear through Div and returned to their original units when recovered.
Stragglers made their way to the nearest unit they could find and were integrated into the unit.

Psychological Warfare:
PW deserted his unit and tried to make his way home because he did not like the NKA.
PW picked up a UN leaflet, which he had another soldier read for Ldr, ■…■ ing the South Koreans in the NKA to return to their homes. PW had intended to desert since he found the leaflet and did so at his first available chance.
PW did not hear any UN aerial broadcasts.

US Prisoners of War:
O/a 11 Jan 51, PW transported three wounded US PsW from vic of the SEOUL West Gate to the CHUNG■…■ High School where the 47th Div Medical Station was located. At the Medical Station, the 3 PsW were given medical treatment, Names and ranks of the US PsW u/k.

Medical:
No immunizations were given to men in PW’s unit. The most common disease in his unit was typhoid and that u/k type of innoculations were given to the typhoid patients.
