ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3063　29 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS – 1296)　24 January 1951

Fairly intelligent, seemed cooperative. Reliability – Fair.

29 Aug 50: Inducted into NKA at KYONIP’O (兼二浦) and assigned to the 6th Co, 2nd Bn, 27th Regt, 10th Div as Co clark.

5 Sep 50: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn’s (250 men each) of the 27th Regt arrived in SEOUL by train.

11 Sep 50: 27th Regt arrived SONGJU (星州) after marching for 6 days.

20 Sep 50: The recruits were left in SONGJU (星州) while the best of the 27th Regt (about 1,000 men) were fighting on the HAETONG River (海東江) front.

26 Sep 50: The 27th started to retreat and all of the units of the 10th Div gathered at SONGJU (星州).

8 Nov 50: During the retreat through the mountains, PW was promoted to Jr. Sgt.

15 Nov 50: The 10th Div regrouped at a point 4 km south of HWACH’ON (華川). The rounded and a small number of the recruits were left in the rear area about 6 km south of HWACH’ON (華川) while the main force was located 4 km south of HWACH’ON (華川). At this time, the 10th Ldv Hq was located at KU■…■-RI (九萬里) and the 27th Regt Hq was at a place 2 km east of HONCH’ON (■川). At this time PW’s Bn consisted of about 300-400 men.

11 Jan 51: The 10th Ldr advanced south to DANYANG (丹陽) which took about 5 days. As soon as the Div arrived here, they engaged a ROK unit and they had to withdraw. Div then circled the ROK unit and went to the vicinity of CHOKSUNG (赤城).

14 Jan 51: Div arrived in CHOKSONG (赤城), engaged another ROK unit, was defeated and withdrew. Div intended to circle CHOKSONG (赤城) and go to ANDONG (安東) through YECH’ON (禮川).

16 Jan 51: At YONGDU-DONG (龍頭洞), 12 km north of YECH’ON (禮川), PW could not keep up with the rest of the Div because he was sick. After he parted from the Div, he and his friend decided to surrender to the Security Force in YONGDU-DONG (龍頭洞).

PW’s Bn had 2 US phones: Best of the phones were all of Russian make with a limit of 12km.

16 Jan 51, 10th Div was on the way to ANDONG (安東). After ANDONG (安東), they intended to go to TAEGU (大邱).

Morale among the soldiers was low because of high losses and air attacks.

When the unit was in a battle, the lightly wounded were cared for by the company sanitation men. The seriously wounded were evacuated to the rear aid stations located with the Bns, Regt or Div. Hqs. Bn Aid Stations were located about 1km to the rear. Regt Medical station located about 2km to the rear and the Div. Hospital was located about 5km to the rear.

Each Bn had 2 HMGs and 3 IMGs with 50 rounds for each gun. Each man carried 3 days rations plus 20 rounds. Div was very short of ammunition without any hops of resupply.

PW heard on 22 Dec 50 that the NKA 5th and 9th Divisions were following in the roar.
