FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1382)　19 January 1951

PW was cooperative but information was limited because PW was a noncombatant. Information seems fairly reliable.

50th Army composed of the 148th, 150th, and an unknown Divisions.

148th Division composed of the 442nd, 443rd, and 444th Regts.

442nd Regiment composed of 3 Rifle Bns.

3rd Bn composed of 3 Rifle Companies and HMG Company.

The following code names were used by the 50th Army after its arrival in KOREA.

50th Army - LIANG SHAN PU (梁山部)

148th Div - I TA TUI (一大隊)

150th Div - SAN TA TUI (三大隊)

442nd Regt - I CHUNG TUI (一中隊)

443rd Regt - ERH CHUNG TUI (二中隊)

444th Regt - SAN CHUNG TUI (三中隊)

7 Jan 51, the 148th Division passed by SUWON (CS 2428) and headed southeast from SUWON.

9 Jan 51, PW observed units of the CCF 39th Army 2 Km Northwest of SUWON.

PW heard that the CCF 40th Army was located to the South of SUWON, Jan 51.

PW heard that the CCF 50th Army was located to the East of SUWON, Jan 51.

PW has no information concerning missions of CCF units in KOREA.

PW was inducted into the CNA 6th Army, 93rd Division at KWANGHSI (廣西) Province on 8 May 41. After serving with the CNA at YUNNAM (雲南), ANNAM (安南), and MANCHURIA, PW was captured Oct 49 at HUPEI (湖北) by the CCF 50th Army, 148th Division and was assigned to the capturing unit. Nov 49, the 50th Army arrived at SUCHUAN (四川) where the 50th Army held maneuvers for two months. Apr 50, the 50th Army arrived at HUPEI (湖北) where it was engaged in farming. Sep 50, the 50th Army arrived in ANTUNG (安東).

On or about 6 Oct 50, the 50th Army crossed the YALU river from ANTUNG to SINUIJU. After entering KOREA the 148th Division marched every night until they arrived in TAECHON (YE 1322) o/a 13 Oct 50.

148th Division departed TAECHON o/a 22 Oct 50 and marched southward to a place just north of the 38th parallel, arriving there o/a 26 Dec 50.

148th Division moved southward from the 38th parallel 1 Jan 51 and entered SEOUL 5 Jan 51.

On 6 Jan 51, the 148th Division departed SEOUL, crossed the HAN River, and marched south, arrived at SUWON (CS 2428) 9 Jan 51.

7 Jan 51, PW deserted his unit south of SEOUL and while following the route taken by the 148th Division, was apprehended by the US 27th RCT near HABUNG NI (CS 2808)

The 148th Division never received any replacements after arriving in KOREA.

PW could not offer any information as to how or when casualties are replaced.

The source of replacements and system of replacing losses was unknown.

PW knew nothing of units being withdrawn for the replacement of casualties.

Food was procured locally from farmers.

Troops ate two meals a day, any food that was available.

Horses were used to transport ammo.

Ammo was believed to be supplied through ANTUNG.

The morale of the 148th Division was low because most of the troops were in KOREA against their wishes and because they were awed by UN air power.

On or about 6 Oct 50, while PW was crossing the YALU River from ANTUNG, PW observed approximately 20 US PW’s being taken across the YALU River to ANTUNG. PW’s were guarded by approximately 90 NKA troops. PW’s were wearing ragged NKA uniforms and all were heavily bearded.

Final disposition of these PW’s was unknown.

Communication between Regiment and Battalion was by telephone. Between Battalion and lower echelons messengers, at times, mounted couriers were used.
