2. ASSESSMENT:
PW seemed to be confused, although he seemed to be doing his utmost to cooperate.
Conflicting answers were given throughout the report.
Information seems unreliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
The 50th Army composed of the 148th, 149th, and 150th Divisions and Artillery Bn.
The 148th Div composed of the 442nd, 443rd, and 444th Regiments and Artillery Unit.
The 444th Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bns and Headquarters Unit.
1st Rifle Bn composed of 3 Rifle Companies and Heavy Weapons Co.
Each Rifle Co was composed of 3 Rifle Plats and a Mortar Squad.

PW observed only 1 Mt Gun since coming to KOREA.
PW claims that the 148th Div has never been in combat since coming to KOREA (as of 5 Jan 51).
Personnel losses were through air strikes and desertions.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
5 Jan 51, the 148th Div was approaching SEOUL from an unknown direction.
442nd Regt was the forward element and the 443rd and 444th Regiments were in depth behind the 442nd Regiment.
PW claims he has no knowledge concerning the mission of his unit or any other unit.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the CNA May 48 at FUSHUN (撫順). PW received approx 3 months basic training at FUSHUN and was assigned to an unknown CNA Unit located in FUSHUN. PW’s CNA unit engaged a CCF Force at CHILIN (吉林) during Oct 48. PW’s CNA Unit retreated after the battle in CHILIN and arrived at SHANHAIKUAN (山海剛) during Nov 48. The CNA Unit further retreated through SHANTUNG (山東), HONAN (河南), to SSUCHUAN (四川), arriving there during Jan 49.
Oct 49, the PW’s CNA unit capitulated to the CCF at SSUCHUAN. The PW’s entire unit was designated as the CCF 50th Army.
PW was assigned to the CCF 50th Army, 148th Div, 444th Regt.
During Nov 49, the entire 50th Army departed SSUCHUAN and marched to SHANTUNG (山東) where they boarded a train during Dec 49 and arrived at CHIU TAI (九台) during late Dec 49.
From Dec 49 to Oct 50, the 50th Army was engaged in training and farming at CHIUTAI.
Early Oct 50, the 148th Div crossed the YALU River into SINUIJU (XE 1838). The 148th Div marched to UNSAN (雲山) (date of arrival unknown). Departing UNSAN (date unknown), the 148th Div marched southward passing near PYONGYANG.
PW and six others deserted their unit 5 Jan 51 as the 148th Div was approaching SEOUL. PW and one other joined a group of refugees and walked south. PW and one other were apprehended by US 27th Regt I & R Platoon 101000 Jan 51, vicinity CS 2805.

6. PERSONALITIES:
TAN, Cho Sung, Bn CO, 1st Bn, 444th Regt.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
The 148th Div has not received replacements since arrival in KOREA.
PW could not offer any information as to how or when casualties are replaced.
The source of replacements and system of replacing losses was unknown.
PW did not know anything of units being withdrawn for the replacement of casualties.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained locally and meals consisted of any food that could be obtained. Troops usually ate 2 meals per day.
The 148th Div never received any ammo since coming to KOREA.

9. MORALE:
Morale of the troops in the 444th Regt was very low due to shortage of food, lack of sleep, and lack of will to fight.
PW states that 75% of the men in the unit wanted to desert.

10. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
Runners were used for communications at all echelons. Telephones were used by Battalions and Regiments.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets, or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
