2. ASSESSMENT:
Intelligence, average. Memory of dates, poor. Reliability - Fair.

3. FORMER CHINESE COMMUNIST UNIT:
a. Company
(1) Organization of Unit:
4 squads of 10 men each made one platoon. 3 platoons of 45 men each made a company. PW’s company was composed of approx 170 Koreans. A squad of cooks (12 men) and an observation squad (10 men) were attached directly to the company. Besides these there were 2 aids, (one for the CO and the other for Chief Political Officer) a barber, a bugler, a medic, a document clerk (rank equal to a squad leader) a supply man responsible for rations and clothing (rank equal to a squad leader). 2 squads of each platoon were gunners and the other two ammo-bearers. Each company procured and cooked its own food. The vegetables and meat were paid for with currency but the rice was paid for with ration tickets. Chain of command as follows:
(a) Company commander issued all orders.
(b) Political officer was of the same rank as the CO and he exercised equal authority. However, he concerned himself chiefly with the political indoctrination of his troops and seldom gave orders.
(c) The platoon leaders (according to numerical designation of platoon) were next in command.
(d) Then came the squad leaders.
(e) The Political Officer handles all outgoing and incoming mail. He also served as censor.
(2) Equipment:
(a) Rifles - 3 Japanese rifles per sqd, 12 per plat.
(b) Pistols - Officers, Plat Ldr’s and Ass’t Plat leaders.
(c) LMGs - 2 per company - Japanese make.
(d) US 57mm Anti-Tank Guns - 6 per company, 2 per platoon - US make
(e) Hand grenade - 2 per man. 2 types of hand grenades, anti-tank and anti-personnel.
(f) Rifle ammunition - 70 to 80 rounds per rifle. No ammo for 57mm guns.
(g) Horses - 70 - 80.
(3) Unit Designation:

b. Battalion
(1) Organization of Unit:
Composed of 2 companies, one Chinese and one Korea. Number of troops unknown. 7th Company was a 80mm field arty unit and 8th Company was a 57mm anti-tank company. Rank of CO unknown. Personnel composition of battalion unknown.
(2) Equipment:
(a) 6x57mm anti-tank guns (US made).
(b) 3x80mm field arty guns (Japanese made)
(3) Unit Designation:
49th Army Arty Regt, 3rd Bn.

c. Regiment
(1) Organization of Unit:
3 battalions, numbered one, two and three. One and two have 3 Chinese Companies each. Three had 2 companies one Chinese and one Korean. Companies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 are 80mm FA Companies. 5 is a howitzer company (type of gun unknown). 8 is a 57mm anti-tank unit. (Personnel composition and chain of command unknown.)
(2) Equipment:
(a) Field arty guns - Number and type unknown.
(b) Howitzers - Number and type unknown.
(c) 6x57mm anti-tank guns (US made).
(3) Unit Designation:
49th Army, Arty Regt

d. Army
(1) Organization:
3 divisions: 35th, 36th and either 34th or 37th Arty Regt. Personnel composition and chain of command unknown.
(2) Unit Designation:
49th Army

e. Field Army
(1) Organization:
12 Armies, numbered numerically from 38 to 49.
(2) Unit Designation:
4th Field Army

4. LOCATION OF UNIT AT TIME OF DEPARTURE FOR KOREA:
KWEILING (桂林), CHINA

5. UNIT COMPLEMENT TRANSFERRED TO KOREA:
70 men from 4th Co Arty Bn

6. PAY OF PERSONNEL:
Amount of Yuan received depended on the value of the currency in the respective sections of CHINA. PW received as little as 10 Yuan and as much as 1,200 Yuan. The supply man picked up the pay roll (source unknown). The platoon leaders received pay for their men and gave to the squad leaders to distribute it. No written record was kept and no signatures were required. The troops were paid usually on the 25th of each month.

7. UNIT PARTICIPATION IN THE INVASION OF HAINAN ISLANDS:
57mm anti-tank battalion was attached to the 40th Army. The 40th Army and 43rd Army took part in the invasion. 3 anti-tank guns were riveted to sampans. The remaining 3 were left on the peninsula because there were no sampans to rivet the guns on. The sampans protected the junks transporting the troops. Gun crews of the 3 anti-tank guns riveted on the sampans took part in the invasion whereas gun crews of the guns left behind did not. Motor power for the sampans was provided by auto engines.

9. PROPAGANDA:
a. AMERICA
(1) US wants to make colonies out of CHINA and KOREA.
(2) US wants to profit from the natural resources of CHINA.
(3) US planned friction between CHINA and KOREA and supplied both countries with weapons.

b. CHIANG, Kai Shek (蔣介石):
CHIANG sold CHINA’s gold to buy weapons in order to kill his own people.
CHIANG has deceived the people of CHINA. He is rich and eats well while the majority of us are little less than beggars.
CHIANG’s troops rape, rob and kill innocent people.

c. RUSSIA
(1) RUSSIA is our friend, she has no territorial interest in our country.
(2) RUSSIA is striving to make this a better world to live in. We must aid her.

d. CCF
(1) The CCF if fighting to release the people from bondage.
(2) The CCF will protect CHINA from foreigners.

e. COMMUNISM
(1) Communism is the only form of government which will benefit the people and make them happy.
(2) Communism is true democracy.
(3) Our effort must be doubled to spread communism to the four corners of the earth.
Remarks: The political officer presided over propaganda sessions. There were no set days or hours. The sessions were held whenever the troops assemble and had no duties to perform
