Historical Background:
During May 49, the Chinese Communist Army underwent a general reorganization. On 20 May 49, the Eighth Route Army and the New 4th Army were combined and designated as the 3rd Field Army, composed of the 9th, 10th and 11th Army Groups. In addition to the former 8th Route and New 4th Armies, the 3rd Field Army incorporated such units as the former CNA New 5th Army, the former CNA 70th Army, the former CNA 13th Army, the former CNA 16th Army and the former CNA 2nd Army Group.

The 3rd Field Army is organized into three Army Groups. The 3rd Field Army is composed of an undetermined number of cavalry, artillery, armored and anti-craft units.
Tactics Employed:
In preparation for the operation against the Nationalist Forces on FORMOSA, all units of the 3rd Field Army received amphibious training.
CCF 20th Army:
Historical Background:
30th Army was redesignated 20th Army during the general reorganization of CCF. At that time, the former 5th Div of the CNA was incorporated into the 20th Army. In Jun 49, the majority of the Hq personnel (about 2,000) were transferred to the Chinese naval forces at HAINAN (海南) and 100 soldiers from the 20th Army were sent to the PEIPING Air Corps. Following its redesignation, the 20th Army was located in the SHANGHAI District with the rest of the 3rd Field Army. Strength of the 20th Army was estimated to be 30,000.

The code name of the 20th Army was the Chinese People’s Aid Forces (中國人民支授軍).

4. AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING:
Elements of the 3rd Field Army, 20th Army received amphibious training at WUSUNG (■淞) 12 km N of SHANGHAI and 18 km W of LIUHO (■河) Aug 50 to Sep 50. Three Russian officers conducted the amphibious training program.

Description of vessels:
Small iron vessels:
Used to transport the 20th Army Hq Staff and the Russian Advisors. 5 m long, 1.50 m wide and 1 m in depth. Speed of vessel was 30 MPH.
Wooden motor vessels:
Capacity was 5 tons. Speed of vessel was 5 MPH.
During the course of the amphibious training assault upon WUSUNG Island, Coast Guard Artillery Unit (海防部隊) with its weapons deployed along the SHANGHAI Coast, offered close artillery support to the assault teams. Vessels were deployed in a triangular formation for the landing operation. The Russian advisors led the assault, using red and white flags for signaling.

5. UNIT COMPLEMENT TRANSFERRED TO KOREA:
The 3rd Field Army, crossed the YALU River via CHIAN and reached MANP’OJIN (滿浦鎭) KOREA on 28 Oct 50. PW believes that all of the 3rd Field Army is presently concentrated in Northwestern KOREA.

6. CCF MOVE TO MANCHURIA:
At the beginning of Oct, elements of the 3rd Field Army were transferred to MANCHURIA.
