FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS Special Report 015) 12 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative. Judgement of distance fair. Reliability - Good.

3. FORMER CHINESE COMMUNIST UNIT:
1st Field Army - CCF - Locations
May 1950, PW read in the Chinese “Private” Life Magazine (戰士生治) printed by the 4th Field Army, that units of the 1st Field Army were in NINGHSIA (寧夏), SUIYUAN-SHENG (■遠省) and SHANHSI-SHENG (山西省).
2nd Field Army - CCF - Locations
Units of this Army were in TIBET (西藏), TSINGHAI (靑海), HSINKANG (新疆) and HSIK’ANG (西康) Province.
Locations of 1st and 2nd Field Army General Headquarters unknown.

4. AMPHIBIOUS TRAINING:
119th Div, 40th Army, 4th Field Army
Amphibious Training prior to HAINAN Invasion:
6 hours a day for approx 2 months was spent preparing troops for the invasion.
a. Training was as follows:
(1) Climbing in and out of small rowboats, 2 each of which were assigned to each Co. Capacity: 8 -10 men each.
(2) Rowing out to the bigger sail boats, anchored approx 200 meters out in deeper water.
(3) Daily dry runs, averaging approx 7 miles out and back on the big sail boats, to accustom troops to seasickness.
(4) Daily swimming lessons were given.
(5) Approx 50% of the troops couldn’t swim regardless of swimming lessons.
(6) No field packs were carried while training, only rifles.
(7) Heavy artillery pieces were loaded up on the bigger sail boats when the tide was high and moored close to a pier. Field pieces were broken down and loaded accordingly. Field pieces were cleaned at least twice a week because of corrosion.

5. UNIT PARTICIPATION IN THE INVASION OF HAINAN ISLANDS:
Units Participating
43rd Army of the 4th Field Army
118th Div, 119th Div of the 40th Army, plus the 358th Regt of the 120th Div, also of the 40th Army.
The 359th, 360th Regt of the 120th Div of the 40th Army were held in reserve in KWANTUNG (廣東).
Transportation Used:
Small sail boats, total number used - unknown. Personnel maximum capacity - 30 men.
Big sail boats, total number used - unknown. Personnel maximum capacity - 150 men.
Sail boats with auxiliary gasoline and diesel motors were used to transport heavy artillery pieces.
No tanks were used during the invasion.
Tactics used are as follows:
a. One Regt of the 43rd Armies was sent in advance to HAINAN 12 Apr 50. Mission was to make contact with CCF Guerrilla units located in the HAINAN mountain area. Estimated strength 25,000 men. All were armed. 3,000 were girl guerrillas. This particular mission failed and troops were practically annihilated.
b. After news of the 12 Apr 50 mission was received, 16 Apr 50 was set for the main offense. 1800 hours was set as zero hour.
c. Estimated time involved to cross to HAINAN Island approx 9 hours.
d. 43rd Army’s mission to attack from the west end of the island.
e. The 119th Div of the 40th Army, a frontal attack.
f. The 118th Div was to land and secure the NE area.
g. The 358th Regt of the 120th Div of the 40th Army was also used for the invasion, and was attached to the 119th Div.
h. The island was announced “Secured” on 5 May 50.

6. KOREAN UNITS WITH CCF:
The 119th Div of the 40th Army consisted of 3 guard Co’s attached to Div Hq. The 2nd Guard Co was completely composed of Korean officers and enlisted men. Total 150 men. Prior to crossing into North KOREA, these Korean soldiers were reassigned to various units down to company level and used as guides and interpreters.

7. CHEMICAL WARFARE:
a. Bacteriological Warfare - Negative
b. PW’s Company Commander lectured to his men about gas warfare. Items discussed are as follows:
(1) Run toward the wind
(2) Avoid low areas
(3) Use a wet towel to cover nose and mouth
c. No decontamination sqds
d. No decontamination ointment carried by troops
e. No gas masks
