FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1289)　20 January 1951

Cooperative, intelligent. Reliability, fair.

6 Sep 50: Inducted into the North Korean Volunteers Army at SEOUL. Assigned to 31st Brigade, 6th Bn.

15 Sep 50: Unit started north. Departed SEOUL for CHORWON (鐵原).

10 Oct 50: Unit (31st Brigade) was attacked in the vicinity of CHORWON (鐵原) by the UN Forces. Retreated north along trails in the mountain areas.

29 Oct 50: Arrived in KANGGYE (江界). The 31st Brigade was reorganized and redesignated the 31st Div, composed of three (Inf) Regts. PW assigned to 2nd Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co.

2 Nov 50: Arrived in PONGSAN-MYON (鳳山面).

20 Nov 50: 31st Div departed PONGSAN-MYON (鳳山面) and went south.

20 Dec 50: Div arrived in KUNHWA (金化). The 31st Div received reinforcements, approx 3000, from the 15trh Div which had been engaging in guerrilla activities in the vicinity of WONSAN (元山).

23 Dec 50: 31st Div advanced to YANGGU (楊口). On the night of 24 Dec Div attacked the US defense line along the 38th parallel. PW was captured here on 25 Dec 50.

II Corps was made up of three divisions (2nd, 31st, 12th); each div had three regts, each regt three bns. Each bn consisted of three Rifle Cos plus a HMG co and a mortar co.

3rd Regt: 3,000

31st Div was originally organized in SEOUL on 5 Sep 50 and designated SEOUL Capital Defense Brigade, composed of South Koreans drafted in the vicinity of SEOUL and the central sector of South KOREA. 31st Capital Defense Brigade believed to consist of six bns and composed of approx 800 (all South Koreans) in each bn. 2 Nov 50, at PONGSAN-MYON (鳳山面) 31st Capital Brigade was designated 31st (Inf) Div. It consisted of six Regts with a total of approx 3,500 troops.

After arrival at KUMHWA (金化) 31st Div was reorganized again due to the great number of casualties sustained while advancing. Former 15th Div (Guerrilla Activity Unit) was transferred to the 31st Div with the strength of approx 3,000 troops. 31st Div now consists of 3 Regts, 1st, 2nd (both believed to compose troops of the 15th Div), and 3rd Regt plus other attached units (Reconn Co, Med Co, Communication Co, etc.). When reorganized on 20 Dec 50, 3rd Regt was composed of approx 3,000 troops.

After leaving PONGSAN-MYONG (鳳山面) to advance, the 31st Div was secretly called 68th Div to keep its movement secret. This secret designation of his unit lasted till the time of arrival at KUMHWA (金化). 2nd Regt of the 31st Div was also called HALLASAN Unit (漢拏山), after a mountain located in CHEJU Island (濟州島).

Senior officers above company commanders in the 2nd Regt were called by numbers instead of by name. For example:

2nd Regt Commander: HALLASAN 37

CO of 1st Bn, 2nd Regt: HALLASAN 49

Ass’t CO of 1st Bn, 2nd Regt: HALLASAN 51

Political Officer of 1st Bn, 2nd Regt: HALLASAN 53

Therefore, PW does not know the names of officers assigned to his unit, only the designated numbers.

Battalion and below:

Runners. A runners Plat was directly attached to Bn Hq.

Regiment:

Field phones and runners.

Div:

Communication Co under the direct of Div CP. About 20 walkie-talkies.

As of 24 Dec 50, the 31st Div was approx 15 km SW of YANGGU (楊口) Perimeter, with 1st and 2nd Regts in reserve and 3rd Regt in line, approx 10 km to the front. 2nd Div of the NKA was on the right flank of the 3rd Regt of the 31st Div. 3rd Regt was ordered to occupy a small hill which was called 807 Hill located approx 30 km SW of YANGGU (楊口) Perimeter by midnight of 24 Dec 50. PW participated in the attack of 807 Hill and was captured the next morning.

High because the attack of 807 Hill was the first campaign for troops of his unit.

Regt Medical Cos handled the wounded. Seriously wounded were carried back on stretchers to rear hospitals or civilian hospitals in the vicinity.

Each man carried 5 days rations and 100 rds of small arms ammo. Mortar shells (82 mm) were also carried on the backs of individuals. No ammo depots were observed.
