ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2988　24 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0063)　12 January 1951

PW was very cooperative and all questions asked were promptly answered. Although PW has only 6 years of primary school education, he seems very intelligent. Reliability of the information cannot be determined, possibly true.

Recommended for further interrogation.

PW and another man (KIM Chan Ki) were given special mission by their CO to infiltrate and reconnoiter enemy territory. These two men dressed in civilian clothing, started from KODONG-NI 5 Jan 51. KIM Chang Ki was to reconnoiter the KANG-WON Province and PW the YONG-NI, YANGI, PE-GEMI and CHUK-SAN area. They were not given definite time to return back to the unit, but were told to return back to KODONG-NI. He obtained information concerning UN Forces’ strength, disposition and equipment. At time of capture PW was deserting the Army and traveling south with the refugees. PW last observed 3rd Div (approx 2,000) when he departed on this mission. Believes Div still in KODONG-NI, as he was to report back there. Heard from his Co CO on 5 Jan 51 that the 3rd Div’s objective was CHUKSAN area.

3rd Div had 12 x 76mm field guns (4 guns to a Regt with approx 22 rds/gun). PW observed these guns 5 Jan 51, placed 11 meters apart along the foothill of the Mt located NW outskirt of KODONG-NI village. These guns were camouflaged with straws.

Also saw 13 trucks to pull these pieces, camouflaged and parked in village. Also observed 9 x 50mm mortars, 7 HMGs and all troops armed.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, and 15th Divs are in the II Corps. 3rd Div entered SEOUL 2200 hrs 3 Jan 51 and reached SUWON area 5 Jan 51.

PW heard his Co CO say that approx 20,000 CCF troops of I Corps were located in Mt 5 km NW of KODONG-NI 4 Jan 51.

3rd Div has the 6th Regt (900), 7th Regt (500) and the 9th Regt (600).

While on line duty, he is an ass’t Sqd Ldr. However, when employed on special intelligence mission, he has a rank of Lt Col.

There are 160 men in the 3rd Div who are volunteer intelligence agents who infiltrate into enemy territory for information. These men are in uniforms while with the Div and pull ordinary duties, however, when they are ordered out on a mission, they are in civilian clothing and hold the rank of an officer.
