FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0051) 3 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM, Kyung Ho (32)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Information obtained from PW unreliable. He seems confused and his memory is very poor. PW was interrogated at Regt’l coll point. Is being evacuated through medical channel.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
PW conscripted 9 Sept 50 and assigned to the 16th Regt of 4th Div and with this unit went to the NAKTONG River. After the UN breakthrough, PW’s unit scattered and retreated north. At this time PW joined the 2nd Div and retreated in scattered groups to KANGGYE.
2nd Div was in KANGGYE 3 days where they received clothing, ammo, and food. PW Observed at this time elements of the 4th, 6th, and 9th Div.
2nd Div ordered to cross 38th parallel and move south towards PUSAN. Immediate objective u/k to PW. O/a 18 Dec 50 2nd Div, commanded by former 2nd Div CG while at the NAKTONG River, crossed the 38th parallel; strength of 1500 men. They did not meet any enemy. Exact location of crossing u/k. After crossing the 38th parallel they traveled for 12 days following the TAEBAEK Mt Range.
30 Dec 50 PW’s Regt (strength 500 men) advanced in formation. They had 10 men, 12 Km to front of 1st Bn acting as an advance recon party. Next they had 4 men, 6 Km to the front of 1st Bn (PW was one of them ) as contact man. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn followed in order 4 km apart with the Regt Hq 8 Km behind last Bn. Trails were marked by advance party along Mt trail and at forks of road with broken branches. Rest of Div followed in rear. Each Bn of 130 men ahd the following weapons:
1x82mm mortar (saw 5 rds - actual no u/k)
1 HMG - 500 rds
Carbines & Russian rifles (300 rds per man)
Hand grenades (1 each)
Two thirds of troops were armed, but each soldier carried ammo.
Cotton-padded winter uniforms were issued at KANGGYE.
PW heard from Bn CO after crossing 38th parallel that the 10th, 7th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th Divs also crossed and were following behind them (doubtful).
While PW and 3 others were acting as contact men for the Bn they were surrounded by UN troops. 3 of his comrades were killed and PW was wounded in leg and captured.
