1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative; however, he lacked information due to his being unfamiliar with the military service and being unobservant. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. T/O & E OF UNIT:
V Corps: 38th and other unknown divisions.
PW heard that 6 NKA divisions constituted the V Corps.
38th Div: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regts
3rd Regiment: 3 Inf battalions, 1 each of guard, signal, intendance transportation and stretcher plats,
and 1 HMG Co.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
The 3rd Regiment, strength 500 men, was last heard of proceeding southward, in the 38th parallel area.
Its objective was heard to be CHUNCH’ON (CS8893) and its mission was to conduct guerrilla warfare in that general area.
During late Nov and early Dec 50, the 38th Division was reorganized in the CHILPYONG area (CA3655).
No heavy weapons were seen in PW’s unit.
An estimated two-thirds of the PW’s regiment was unarmed.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted 26 Aug 50 at KANGWON DO, KENPO MYON with approx. 100 others.
Departed for KANGWON DO, YONGU MYON and received 15 days training.
Assigned to the artillery regiment of the 38th Division at TAEWHA MYON (DS5249) 5 Sep 50.
The entire arty regiment departed TAEWHA MYON o/a 20 Sep 50 and marched Northwards through SINGOSAN (CU6203), KOWON (CU4967), HAGARU (CV5292), CHANGJIN (CA4529), HUCH’ANG (CA3886) and arrived in CHILPYONG (CA3655) on 5 Nov 50.
It was heard that the entire 38th Division retreated and assembled in the CHILPYONG area.
28 Nov 50, the arty regiment was deactivated and its 500 troops, distributed to the 3 Inf Regts. Reason for deactivation was unknown.
PW was assigned to the 3rd Regiment and remained with it, until captured.
The entire 3rd Regiment departed CHILPYONG on 15 Dec 50, passing through unknown places, using mountain trails and the highway, alternately.
They arrived in the 38th parallel area, o/a 25 Dec 50.
PW was separated from the regiment in that area and was captured.

6. PERSONALITIES:
KIM, Yon Kil (김연길), Major C.O., 3rd Regiment

7. REPLACEMENTS:
An average of 2 to 3 recruits were seen in each company during Nov 50.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was procured from villages and towns. Three meals a day were received by the troops in ample amounts. No food shortage was suffered by this unit.
No ammo was received after they were issued their initial issue at CHILPYONG of approx. 50 rds per man during early Dec 50.

9. MORALE:
Morale was low due to lack of weapons and frequent air attacks by UN planes.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
