ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 2965　23 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI – 1303)　8 January 1951

Cooperative. PW was suffering from wounds on his face and right leg inflicted by mortar fragments.

PW does not seem to have been able to grasp details about military activities. He acts confused.

Information, although limited, does seem to be fairly reliable.

PW conscripted into the 2nd NKA Div at HAMHUNG (CV9418) 29 Aug 50. There, he received approx 3 weeks of basic training in mountain warfare.

Departed from HAMHUNG 15 Sep 50, marched with the entire 2nd Div, and arrived (after traveling through the mountains) at KANGGYE (BA9837) 27 Sep 50. There, the 2nd Div was assigned the mission of defending the mountains around KANGGYE against possible UN attacks toward KANGGYE. At this time the bulk of all remnants of the NKA, including the 2nd Div, were in and around KANGGYE and were able to reorganize because KANGGYE was not being bombed by UN aircraft.

Departed from KANGGYE o/a 25 Nov 50, marched with the entire 2nd Div, through the mountains in a southeasterly direction, and arrived at KUMHWA (CT 6538) o/a 18 Dec 50.

Departed from KUMHWA o/a 18 Dec 50, marched with the entire 2nd Div, and arrived at HWACH’ON (CT8617), date unknown.

Departed from HWACH’ON, date unknown, marched with the 2nd Div, and arrived at an unidentified mountain area approx 16 Km East of CH’UNCH’ON on 27 Dec 50. On 28 Dec 50, PW walked alone to a nearby village in search of food. While eating lunch, he was wounded by ROK mortar fire at 281200 I Dec 50. He was captured by ROK soldiers who entered the village about one hour later.

2nd Div composed of the 4th, 6th, and 17th Inf Regts, Medical Co, Communications Co, and Guard Co.

17th Regt is composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rifle Bns, Arty Co, Guard Plat, Medical Plat, Communications Plat and Recon Platoon.

3rd Bn is composed of the 7th, 8th and 9th Rifle Companies, Communications Plat, Supply Plat, 45mm AT Gun Plat, and 14.5mm AT Rifle Plat.

8th Co is composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Riffle Plats. Each platoon is composed of 4 squads with 11 men per squad.

8th Co, 3rd Bn, 17th Regt,

PW believes the combat efficiency of the 17th Regt to be poor because the majority of the men lack sufficient training to fight as an effective combat team.

No other information; PW claims that he could give no information whatsoever on any unit missions or locations. CP locations and related information were unavailable to the PW because of the wide dispersal of troops of PW’s unit in the mountains.

The 17th Regt received approx 400 replacements during Sep 50 while the regt was at KANGGYE.

PW received an average of two bowls of rice daily since departing from KANGGYE o/a 25 Nov 50 until the 17th Regt arrived at KUMHWA o/a 18 Dec 50. Thereafter and to the present, 17th Regt personnel received an average of three bowls of rice. Explanation for increase in ration after KUMHWA was unknown.

During the middle of Nov 50, 2nd Div personnel were issued new supplies of ammunition; PW stated that each rifleman received 300 rds of ammo at KANGGYE. PW does not know the source of the ammunition.

Because 17th Regt personnel believe they are now on the winning side, their morale is high.

PW observed approx 20 US PsW being taken in a truck northward through the streets of HAMHUNG during the first part of Sep 50.

PW had heard rumors that CCF units have entered KOREA but he had observed none.
