2. ASSESSMENT:

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
4 Jul 50: Conscripted and assigned to Mortar Co, 1st Bn, 1st Regt, 9th Div at MUNSAN (汶山).
5 Jul 50: 9th Div advanced to SEOUL and secured the city.
25 Jul 50: Moved to INCH’ON (仁川).
4 Aug 50: The 3rd Regt of the 9th Div remained in INCH’ON (仁川) and other two regts (1st and 2nd) advanced to YONGSAN (靈山) via TAEJON (太田).
30 Aug 50: 9th Div was surrounded by US Army at YONGSAN (靈山) and all elements of the 9th Div were scattered.
3 Nov 50: 9th Div arrived in ICH’ON (利川) after the hurried withdrawal necessitated by the heavy losses suffered in YONGSAN (靈山). PW was assigned to the independent 8th Regt at ICH’ON (利川).
24 Dec 50: The independent 8th Regt was transferred to the 2nd Div and was designated as the 6th Regt at HWACH’ON (華川).
26 Dec 50: 2nd Div crossed the 38° parallel N of HONGCHON (洪川).
27 Dec 50: 6th Regt, 2nd Div engaged the ROK troops 12 km S of HWACH’ON (華川). PW and two others were cut off from their unit, so they surrendered.

d. Intentions:
While the CCF fought against the UN Forces, 2nd Div was to conduct guerrilla activities in the rear of the UN Forces.

e. Morale:
Morale low because of lack of supply. Troops marched at night and slept during the day.

f. Replacement:
No replacements were received since reorganization.

g. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
The slightly wounded two could walk, went along with the unit. The seriously wounded were left in the houses of village. No evacuation because of the lack of vehicles.

h. Supply:
The 2nd Div carried no rations. Forced the people of the villages occupied to provide food.
Ammo:
100 rds for US M-1 rifles; 200 rds for M1891/30 rifles; 180 rds ammo for PPsh M1941 SMGs and 300 rds for US 60mm mortar. When the 2nd Div ran short of ammo, it drew from adjacent CCF troops.

PW heard that the 6th Div was attacking WONJU (原州) and the 10th Div was located at HONGCH’ON to the front of the 2nd Div.

k. Miscellaneous:
Organization of Mortar Co, 1st Bn, 6th Regt, 2nd Div:
Mortar Co Hq had three officers and four enlisted men. There were three platoons; first (1 off, 9 EM), second (1 off, 8 EM) and ammo plat (1 off, 6 EM) Mortar Co has only one US 60mm mortar. 3rd Plat were ammo bearers and all EM of the company were to carry 3 mortar rounded each. There were neither field phones nor radios, and runners were used to make contacts with the Bn CP.
