ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2948　22 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0156)　19 January 1951

PW surrendered voluntarily to elements of the 21st Inf 4 km N of YOJU when he was separated from a patrol. PW was in good physical condition and of average intelligence. Cooperative to interrogation but very slow in answering.

PW conscripted at HAMHUNG 30 Nov 50. Received five days training with 7th Regt, 3rd Bn, 1st Co at HAMHUNG. Five days after training Regt moved S via WONSAN, SINGO-SAN CU6302, SEPO-RI CT5777. POLLYE-RI CT4855, KUMHWA CT 6538 (25-6 Dec 50), HWACHON CT8617 (28 Dec 50) to MAEBONG-SAN 12 km E of HWACHON 291900 Dec 50. At MAEBONG-SAN Regt engaged ROK troops 010600 Jan 51. Regt withdrew 04 Jan 51 to HWACH’ON and was redesignated 39th Unit. No replacements. 39th Unit departed HWACH’ON 042000 Jan for TAEJON via YANGGU DT1217 (5 Jan), IMJE DT2713 (6 Jan) and OTAN-NI 161600 Jan 51. Mission of 39th Unit was to go to TAEJON and build up a division (39th) by enlisting young men from neighboring villages. No knowledge of new wpns. 39th Div was to set up defense in this vic. PW was sent out with 29 others to find out if UN Forces were in front of 39th Unit. No knowledge of the other 29 men.

1st Co - Rifles and carbines (no u/k) 100 rds ea man PPSH SMG (no u/k) 1 drum

No MGs in Bn. Last time received ammo at MAEBONG-SAN (12 km E of HWACH’ON)

(3) No tanks, arty pieces or vehicles.

(4) The 39th Unit is presently composed of two Bn and each Bn is composed of four Cos with attached Sig and Sup Plats.

PW told by company commander 161600 Jan that a CCF Div was north of OTAN-NI.

PW stated there were training centers at HAMHUNG, SOKHU-MYON, KANGSANG-RI, and CHONGJIN.

No US PsW observed. Observed three ROK PsW at MAEBONG-SAN 021000 Jan 51 who volunteered for 39th Unit. One of them was LEE Yun Pon, 20, who was assigned to 1st Co.
