FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0042) 26 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Evaluation: Cooperative in answering questions and info seems to be fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CHRONOLOGY:
On or about 23 Oct 50, 359th Regt with strength of approx 3000 men crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG. 358th and 360th Regts of the 120th Div also crossed but did not know when.
After crossing the border, the Regt traveled for 5 night and arrived at UNTAESAN area (vic of UNSAN YE3927) on or about 29 Oct 50. At this location the unit fought for 5 days with ROK troops but had to retreat.
O/a 1 Nov 50, the Regt retreated approx 28 kms NW from UNTAESAN to u/k mountain. At this location the Regt rested for more than 20 days. Did not observe or hear of any other unit in this area. 1700 24 Nov 50 the unit left this location and arrived at CHONGCHON River vicinity of BV5223.
Before leaving this mountain the unit was told by Co CO that they had to go and fight and also told them that since 38th, 39th and 40th Armies are in KOREA, they have nothing to worry about because of sufficient manpower and told them to fight their best and get this war over with and go back home.
2400 26 Nov 50 upon arriving at river (vic of BV5223) they made contact with UN troops and 2nd Plat was first to cross the river but did not know if the rest of the troops crossed or not. The unit was fighting till 0800 hrs 26 Nov 50 but when UN troops advanced to their position, PW surrendered.
Objective of the Regt u/k. Weapons of 359th Regt: All riflemen were armed with Jap. rifles, u/k number of 92mm Inf guns, (3 Hvy mortars (size u/k) to attached mortar Co, (2 x 81mm mortars to each Bn, 3 HMGs to each Bn, 2 Bazookas to each Bn, 3 x 60mm mortars to each Co, 1 LMG to each squad.

4. AMMO:
Riflemen had approx 100 rds and 4 grenades. LMGs - approx 700 rds. 23 Nov, riflemen received 40 rds of ammo. This was the first issue since crossing the border.

5. FOOD:
Approx 10 days after crossing the border, they received food from MANCHURIA but after that, they procured food from villages.

6. MORALE:
Believes that morale of the troops are low because most of the men are wondering why they are fighting in KOREA, and because of US air attacks.
Approx half of the 359th Regt was formerly with the CNA.
