ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2902　17 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1294)　30 December 1950

PW was very cooperative and spoke freely. The information seems fairly reliable. PW is recommended for further interrogation on medical subjects.

PW was inducted into the NKA at YONGDUNGP’O on 8 Sep 50. He was assigned to the 18th Div, 1st Regt, Medical Section located at YONGDUNGP’O on 8 Sep 50. After the landing of UN Forces at INCHON, the 18th Div retreated Northward, passing through SEOUL, UIJONGBU (CS2777), KUMHWA (CT 6537), to YUDAM-NI (CV 4182). PW was transferred to the 2nd Div at YUDAM-NI on 26 Nov 50.

The 18th Div retreated further Northward to ■UNGSAN (DA 2918).

The 2nd Div was reorganized at YUDAM-NI during the period from 16 Nov 50 to 28 Nov 50.

The 2nd Div departed YUDAM-NI on 28 Nov 50 and marched Southward passing through ONHWA MYON (CV 0628), ■O■TONG-NI (CU 3416), KARYOJU-RI (CT 2791), ICHON (CT 2761), OKTONG-NI (CT 3657), PYONGGANG (CT 5153), KUMHWA (CT 6537), HWACHON (CT 8718), to ORON-NI (DS 1898).

PW and three others deserted at ORON-NI and surrendered.

II NKA Corps was composed of the 2nd (code: 200), 10th, 15th and 31st (code: 684) Divisions.

2nd Div was composed of the 4th (code: 104), 6th (code: 106) and the 17th (code: 107) Rifle Regiments, 1 Artillery Regt, Recon Co, Supply Unit, Medical Bn, Engineer Bn, Signal Bn, and an Intendance Plat.

17th Regt was composed of 3 Rifle Bns, Medical Co, Recon Plat, Artillery Bn, Engineer Plat, and Signal Co.

Each Rifle Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co, Medical Plat, and Intendance Platoon.

The entire 2nd Div assembled at an area 4 km E of ORON-NI (DS 1898) on 26 Dec 50 after engaging a ROK unit. Orders were issued that the 2nd Div was to proceed 20 Km Eastward from ORON-NI. The 2nd Div departed for that location on 261700 Dec 50.

The mission of the 2nd Div was to harass UN troops by constructing road blocks behind UN defense lines. The 2nd Div was to avoid contact with UN units as much as possible.

PW believes that the mission of the entire II Corps was similar to the mission of the 2nd Div.

Approx 80% of the troops with the 2nd Div were replacements which joined the unit after the 2nd Div retreated from the NAKTONG River.

Troops of the 2nd Div looted the villages for food after they came to South Korea.

At present, the 2nd Div was not receiving any supplies.

The morale of the troops with the 2nd Div was very low because of the lack of supplies. Approx 50% of the troops were ill or under treatment for exposure. Medical facilities were very inadequate.

Villages in North Korea were planning to welcome the CCF by preparing sweets and “sake” to give to the CCF. PW heard that a CCF mechanized unit was located in the Western Sector of the present line, d/u 50.

PW heard that 30 CCF Divisions are aiding or ready to aid North Korea.

PW heard that large numbers of North Korean units including Tank, Airforce, and Mechanized Units are undergoing training in Manchuria.
