ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2901　17 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1293)　30 December 1950

Although information was limited because of the PW’s brief military service, he was very cooperative and spoke freely.

Information seems fairly reliable.

PW was inducted into the NKA at HAGARU RI (CV 5172) on 1 Nov 50 and was assigned to the 3rd Regt, 38th Division. The 38th Div was organized o/a 1 Nov 50 at HAGARU RI by the enlargement of a Brigade (designation unknown).

After training at CHILPYONG (phonetic) until 24 Nov 50, the entire 38th Division departed CHILPYONG and marched southward passing through YONGWON (BV 9012), YANGDOK (BU 9644), and KOKSAN (BT 9795).

PW and one other man were separated from their unit at KOKSAN on 20 Dec 50. After heading southward in an effort to locate their unit, the PW and his comrade surrendered to a ROK Unit at CHNAGAM NI (CT 5711) because the PW feared punishment for his failure to locate his unit.

V NKA Corps was composed of the 38th Division and other unknown units.

38th Division was composed of 3 Rifle Regts (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), Medical Section, and Division Rear Section.

3rd Regiment was composed of 3 Rifle Bns, Medical Plat, and Rear Section.

Each Rifle Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Cos, HMG Co, Mortar Co, Medical Plat, and Supply Plat.

The 38th Division has never been in combat since its organization o/a 1 Nov 50.

There were no artillery pieces nor artillery units with the 38th Division.

PW believes that V Corps was composed of newly organized units.

PW was separated from his unit on 20 Dec 50 at KOKSAN (BT 9795). At that time the 38th Division was marching south.

The mission of the 38th Division was to harass UN Units in the CHUNCHON (CS 8894) area by guerilla warfare. The 38th Division was to go to CHUNCHON via KUMHWA (CT 6538) and HWACHON (CT 8617).

Food was obtained locally from villages which the unit passed.

Ammo was believed to be supplied through channels.

Details unknown.

Morale of the troops with the 3rd Regt, 38th Division was fairly high because they believed that victory can be attained with the aid of CCF.

PW surrendered voluntarily to escape probable punishment for having been separated from his unit.

During the period from 26 Dec 50 to 28 Dec 50, PW observed a total of approximately 2000 CCF troops in villages located along the road leading from KUMHWA (CT 6538) to CHANGAM NI (CT 5711). CCF Troops were armed with small arms and mortars. PW asked the CCF troops if they were going to attack or withdraw. The CCF Troops told the PW that they were undecided.

Messengers (Runners) were the chief means of communication. Telephones were available for communication between regiment and division.
