ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2899　16 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS – 1264)　11 January 1951

Intelligent, cooperative. Reliability – Good.

5 Aug 50: Inducted into NKA and assigned to the non-commissioned officer’s school unit as squad leader at WONSAN.

7 Sep 50: NCO training unit departed WONSAN by rail for SINBAN CHOLLA NAMDO (新反 全羅南道).

20 Oct 50: NCO unit retreated from SINBAN and went to WONSAN on foot thru the mountains.

30 Nov 50: Arrived at ANBYON (安辺), south of WONSAN and assigned to the newly regrouped 2nd Div, Patrol Co under Div Hq.

6 Dec 50: 2nd Div advanced to HWACH’ON (華川) vis KUMHWA (金化).

19 Dec 50: 2nd Div crossed 38° parallel S of HWACH’ON.

23 Dec 50: 2nd Div engaged ROK forces, 17th Regt, 18th Regt, in vicinity of HONGCH’ON (洪川).

24 Dec 50: UN air attack caused losses of approx one (1) plat.

24 Dec 50: Captured by 22nd Regt on the way back to CP from patrol.

Aug 50, 2nd Div fought at CH’ANGNYONG (昌寧) along with the NKA, 10th Div and 4th Div. After heavy losses in the retreat in Sep 50, the unit was reorganized on 15 Nov 50 at CHONGJU (定州). Now belongs to 2nd Corp which consists of the 2nd Div, 10th Div, 15th Div and an Independent Regt. 2nd Div now consists of 3 Inf Regts (17th, 4th and 6th) and Arty Regt plus other attached units (Patrol Co, Engr Co, Signal Co, Med Co, etc).

2 Dec 50 the unit moved to ANBYON (安辺) on foot, and advanced to the 38° parallel N of HONGCH’ON (洪川) via KUMHWA (金化) HWACH’ON (華川). For the first time at HONGCH’ON the unit was engaged.

LEE, Ho (李浩)(이호), Major Gen (少將), 25, CG, 6th Div. He was formerly the 4th Regt CO of the same Div. Because the former CG became ill, he succeeded CG.

LEE, Tong Ch’ol (李同鉄)(이동쳘). Col (大佐), Age 35, 2nd Div, 17th Regt CO.

CH’OE, Hyon (崔鉉)(최현), Lt Gen, 40, CG, II Corps. He has been in RUSSIA and served with the CCF. Appointed Nov 15. Formerly CG, 2nd Div.

Under existing circumstances, the imminent object of NKA, it to reach PUSAN (釜山) through guerrilla tactics. All of NKA units are competing each other to be the first to reach PUSAN. In case they can reach PUSAN, they will cut off the supply route of UN force and will make an attack from the rear to make contact with the CCF coming south. KIM, Il Song (金日成), Chief of NK said they are going to fight the second line war (第二戰線) having fought the first line war. The second line war will begin from the time the NKA occupies PUSAN. PW was told that they will get the support of great numbers of aircraft in Second Line War.

Low: Because of starving for 3 days.

No replacements were received since reorganization on 15 Nov.

All of the wounded could not be evacuated for want of vehicles. Lightly wounded followed his unit and the seriously wounded were left behind.

Each man carried 4 days ration and 200 – 300 rds. 5 – 10 rds for mortars. Because one-third of their rifles were made in U.S. they could use captured ammo.

10th div to the front of 2nd Div and 15th div to the rear of 2nd Div.
