FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD – 0192) 27 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation. Information seems fairly reliable, however, PW did not know many place names, therefore, further interrogation not recommended.

3. TO/E, DISPOSITION:
Prior to PW’s capture, the 40th Army, 120th Div had approx 11,000 men. The Div was composed of 358th, 359th and 360th Regts. PW’s Regt(359th) had approx 2400 men. The Regt consisted of 3 Rifle Bns and 2 artillery Co, 1 Medical Company and a communication company attached directly to the Regt. 2nd Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Co’s and one Hvy Weapons Co. Each Rifle Co was made up of 3 Rifle Plats and one 60mm Mortar Plat. Each Plat had 3 Sqds of 12 men each. PW’s Hvy Weapons Co had 153 men. It was broken down into 3 plats of about 35 men each.
23 Nov, the 359th Regt left from the vicinity of UNSAN and headed south. After travelling about 4 kms they came across a wooden bridge (approx 200 m long) and travelling about 8 km arrived at UNTAE SAN (located approx 800 m W of CHONGCHON River) (this mountain is about 200 m high). Here, the unit spent the night. Prior to leaving UNSAN the three Regts headed in different directions. The disposition of 358th and 360th Regts was unknown. 251800 Nov 50 PW’s unit departed UNTAE SAN by battalions and arrived about 600 yards back of CHONGCH’ON River. The 2nd Bn CP was located there. PW did not know whereabouts of the other Bn CPs. The Regt CP was in the vicinity of UNTAE SAN. The Asst Regt Comdr was with the 2nd Bn.
251100 Nov, PW’s company and another (strength unk) crossed the river and engaged the enemy, but after being hit by the enemy (tanks, artillery and MG fire), at about 260800, PW and 3 others surrendered.
PW’s Co had 3x82mm Mortars (Made in China) w/60 rds per piece. 6 HMGs (Jap M92) w/2000 rds of ammo. Every man in the company had two had grenades. Ammo was brought in by horsecart. Prior to leaving UNSAN they received ammo, brought in by truck. Place of initial issue of ammo unknown. The two artillery companies attached to the Regt had 4x92 model Jap artillery and 4 Hvy Mortars (Calibre unk) in each company. Each artillery piece was drawn by horse and two horse-drawn carts of ammo to a piece.
