FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #1 - 0304) 12 January 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was of average mentality but lacked information. Reliability – fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Aug 50 – PW conscripted int NKA and sent to KANGSO (江西) where the NAMHAE BRIGADE was being formed.
End Sep 50 – NAMHAE BRIGADE which was stationed just South of SEOUL was ordered to retreat and became scattered.
PW and 2 platoons of men retreated to ICHON (伊川) where other by-passed soldiers were gathered. The 106th Regiment was formed from the NKA stragglers.
Mid-Dec 50 – 106th Regiment was dissolved and absorbed by 27th Division. Approx 2,400 men were involved at this time, reorganization occurring near the 38th parallel.
Route covered after crossing the border was uncertain, however, they did pass through HONGCH’ON (洪川).
7 Jan 51 – Entered WONJU (原州) 0400 hrs, encountering no opposition. 7th Regiment, which entered the city while dark, tried to leave before dawn, but was discovered and received heavy mortar fire and air attacks resulting in heavy losses. PW was captured here.

Unit Organization and Strength:
27th Division – composed of 3 Regiments of which 7th Regt was one.
7th Regiment – composed of 3 Battalions.
1st Battalion – composed of 3 companies and 1 HMG Company.
Strength (original):
7th Regiment – 1,000 men
2nd Battalion – 319 men
2nd Company – 64 men PW states all except 5 men of the 2nd Company were killed at WONJU 7 Jan 51. 2nd Battalion received heavy losses.

20 Russian Riffles (100 rds per)

All of the above equipment was lost at WONJU.

Communications:
Runners are usually used except when telephone wires, already strung, could be put to use.

4. GENERAL:
PW heard his company commander say that the 27th Division formerly was the “ANDONG 12th DIVISION” and was composed of battle hardened veterans.
PW neither saw nor heard of UN leaflets or broadcasts.
