2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative and of average intelligence. Reliability – good.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
1 Nov 50: Inducted into the NKA at HAGARU-RI (下𥔘隅里). Assigned to the 38th Div, 3rd Regt, Independent Co as an ass’t company commander with rank of 1st Lt.
7 Nov 50: the 3rd Regt was reorganized. PW was reassigned to the 6th Co as ass’t CO.
15 Nov 50: The 38th Div moved out to SOPUK-DONG (小北洞) to avoid air attacks.
25 Nov 50: The 38th Div received an order to depart for the South.
25 Dec 50: Arrived at KUMHWA (金化). PW was ordered to seek soldiers who were left behind by their unit. While searching for the missing soldiers, PW lost his way near KUMHWA (金化).
28 Dec 50: Arrived at CHANAM-NI (埸岩里) and captured by the ROK Army.

b. Unit Organization:
38th Div was under the control of the V Corps. Div consisted of 3 Regts. Regts consisted of 3 Bns. Bn consisted of 3 Cos.
Strength: (As of 15 Nov 50 when the 38th Div was reorganized.)
38th Div: 3600 to 4000
Regt: 1200
Bn: 400 to 450
Co: 100

c. Unit History:
The 38th Div, believed to have been organized as of 15 Nov 50 in the vicinity of SOPUK-DONG (小北洞), with an unknown number of new conscripts from South KOREA and the remainder of other military units which were under strength. After completion of reorganization on 25 Nov 50, the 38th Div received orders from V Corps to join the 2nd Div, which was still located in the vicinity of CHUNCHON (春川).

d. Personalities:
PANG, Ho San (方虎山), Maj Gen, CG of the V Corps, former CG of the 6th Div as of Oct 50.
SIN, Tong Gyun (申東均), Capt, CO of the 6th Co, 25, graduated from a military academy in 45.

e. Code:
Code number of the 3rd Regt was known as “335”.

f. Communications:
Company and lower: Runner
Battalion: Field phones available, but mainly runners used.
Regiment: Field phones and runners (officers) for communication to Div CP.

g. Disposition:
While advancing toward the south, 1st and 2nd Regts were always in front and 3rd Regt was in the rear. Div CP was always located between 1st Regt and 2nd Regt.

h. Intention:
The 38th Div was to join the 2nd Corps in vicinity of CHUNCHON(春川) by 25 Dec 50, as reinforcements.

i. Morale:
Among new draftees from South KOREA was low. The remainder of other military units had high morale.

j. Replacements:
No replacements.

k. Medical:
Bn aid stations attached to each Bn were composed of two medical officers, 10 medical EM and four nurses.
Seriously wounded were left behind and received medical care in the civil hospitals in the area.

l. Supply:
Each man carried 3 days rations and 100 rds ammo for small arms.
