FIELD REPORT (528 – MISPI – 0151) 25 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LI, Hsien-tao (李顯濤) Chinese
AGE: 22
RANK: None (Has privileges of an officer)
DUTY: Cultural Instructor.
EDUCATION: 9 yrs (6 yrs primary school; 3 yrs high school)
PLACE OF CAPTURE: KORANGPO (CT1106)
DATE OF CAPTURE: 241600 Dec 50.
PLACE OF BIRTH: HONAN-SHENG, SIHSIENG, WUIUNGCHI (河南省 息縣 鳥龍集)
HOME ADDRESS: Same as above.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a student prior to induction into Chinese Communist Army. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology.
PW was inducted into the Chinese Communist Army 20 May 49 at HONAN-SHENG (河南省). Upon induction, because of his education, PW was assigned to the 2nd Co, 1st Bn, 348th Regt, 116th Div, 39th Army as a Cultural Instructor. O/a Jul 50, PW departed HONAN-SHENG (河南省) and went to HAICHENG (海城) at which place the 348th Regt joined the rest of the 116th Div. O/a 20 Oct 50 the 348th Regt departed HAICHENG for ANTUNG. Upon reaching ANTUNG o/a 22 Oct 50, the 348th Regt processed across the YALU River into SINUIJU. PW’s unit departed SINUIJU on foot and processed to TAECHON (YE1322). Date of arrival u/k. PW’s unit departed TAECHON and arrived at UNSAN (YE3928) three days later. At UNSAN, PW’s unit engaged in combat. PW’s unit departed UNSAN in the early part of Nov 50 and arrived at YONGBYON (YE4011). In the latter part of Nov 50, PW’s unit proceeded Southward. PW’s unit bypassed PYONGYANG, however, the exact route Southward was u/k to PW. O/a 20 Dec 50, PW’s unit arrived in vic of KORANGPO (CT1106). 241600 Dec 50 while PW and 6 others were in their trench, they were attacked by an element of the 11th ROK Regt and captured.

b. Unit Organization and Strength.
The 39th Army consisted of the 115th, 116th, and 117th Divs. The 116th Div consisted of the 346th, 347th, and 348th Regts. The 348th Regt consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Inf Bns, Security Co, Arty Btry, Med Plat, Sig Plat, Recon Plat. The 1st Bn consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Rifle Cos, HW Co. (Other u/k). The 2nd Co consisted of 3 rifle platoons, 60mm mortar plat. (Others u/k)

Strength of 1st Bn – approx. 600
Strength of 2nd Co – approx. 110

c. Equipment.
The 2nd Co was armed with approx. 20 Jap 38 rifles, u/k number of 60mm mortars, u/k number of SMGs, 1 Bazooka (type u/k) and u/k number of pistols (type u/k). the HW Co was equipped with 82mm mortars, HMGs (numbers u/k).

d. Unit Assignment and Intention.
PW heard that they were sent to North KOREA to keep the UN Forces from entering MANCHURIA. PW heard from the Co Political Officer that they were to cross the 38° parallel and attack South KOREA.

e. Disposition.
2nd Co and elements of the HW Co were deployed in the hills North of KORANGPO on 24 Dec 50.

f. Communication.
Telephones were used as a means of communication between Bn Hq and Co Hqs. Runners were used between Co and Plats.

g. Knowledge of Other Units.
PW heard from Co Officers that the 39th Army held the area N of KORANGPO with the 38th Army on its East flank and the 40th Army on its West flank.

h. Armor and Artillery.
In the early part of Nov 50, PW observed approx. 10 arty pieces (type u/k)

i. Morale and Propaganda.
PW stated that the majority of the troop’s morales were low due to lack of food, supplies and because of the constant movement. PW observed UN surrender leaflets at UNSAN and from that time PW’s intention was to desert his unit, however, did not have the opportunity.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies.
Food supply was low and was foraged from nearby villages. PW had no information on ammo supply as he was unarmed up to the time of capture.

b. U.S. Prisoners of War.
PW observed 2 U.S. POWs West of PYONGYANG while crossing the TAEDONG River (Exact place and date u/k)

c. Uniform Worn at Time of Interrogation.
CCF winter uniform with red pipings on the collar and scams of the trousers.

d. Type Transport Used After Crossing Border.
Movement was on foot during night due to UN air strikes and mostly secondary roads were used. Villages were avoided due to constant air strikes.
