FIELD REPORT (528 – MISPI – 0150) 25 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: SHU, Li-chih (孫立志) Chinese
AGE: 25
RANK: None (IN: PW stated that he had the privilege equivalent to a Asst Plat Ldr).
DUTY: In Charge of Weapons.
UNIT: 39th Army, 116th Div, 348th Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co.
EDUCATION: 2 yrs primary school.
PLACE OF CAPTURE: KORANGPO (CT1106)
DATE OF CAPTURE: 241600 Dec 50.
PLACE OF BIRTH: LIAOSI-SHENG, SZEPING-CHIEH, LISHU-HSIENG, YUSHUTAI (遼西省 四平街 梨樹村 楡樹台)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW had a cut on his left forehead. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology.
PW volunteered into the Chinese Nationalist Army Jun 46 at SZEPINGCHIGH (四平). After serving for apporx 1 yr, PW was captured by the Chinese Communist Army at SZEPINGCHIEG in Jun 47 and was integrated into the 39th Army, 116th Div, 348th Regt, 1st Bn. In Dec 49, the 39th Army moved to KWNGSISHENG (廣西省). From KWANGSI-SHENG, the 39th Army moved to HONAN-SHENG (河南省) in Jan 50. The 39th Army remined at HONAN-SHENG until Jul 50 and then moved to LIAOTUNG-SHENG (遼東省). At this location, PW received approx. 3 months of training on mountain climbing and night fighting tactics. Upon completion of training, the 39th Army moved to ANTUNG and on 22 Oct 50 the 39th Army crossed the YALU River and entered Korea. After crossing the river, the 116th Div travelled on foot and arrived at TAECHON (YE1322), date unknown. From TAECHON the 116th Div marched to UNSAN (YE3928) at which place it was engaged. From UNSAN, the 39th Army advanced to PYONGYANG, via YONGBYON (YE4011), PAKCON (YE2201), KAECHON (YD5495), SUNCHON (YD5267) arriving 12 Dec 50. 16 Dec 50, the 348th Regt of the 116th Div departed PYONHYANG and marched to vic of KORANPO (CT1106), via SANGWON-MYONG (BT4799), SOHUNG (BT5259), SINMAK (BT5856), NAMCHONJOM (BT7245), HANPO-RI (BT7734), arriving 20 Dec 50. 21 Dec 50, PW and approx. 110 men of 2nd Co, 1st Bn were sent on a Recon Mission and 24 Dec 50, PW and 6 others were captured by the 1st ROK Div.

b. Unit Organization and Strength.
The 39th Army consisted of the 115th, 116th and 117th Divs.
The 115th Div consisted of the 343rd, 344th, and 345th Regts. The 116th Div consisted of the 346th, 347th, and 348th Regts. The 117th Div consisted of the 349th, 350th, 351st Regts. Each Regt consisted of 3 Bns. Each Bn consisted of 3 rifle Cos and 1 Mortar Co Each rifle Co consisted of 3 rifle plats and 1 mortar plat:

c. Equipment.
Each Rifle Co had 6 LMGs and 2 Mortars (60 mm). the personnel were armed with Jap M38 rifles. U.S. carbines and U.S. SMGs. Each man also carried 4 hand grenades. Each Mortar Co had 4 HMGs and 2 Mortars (81mm and 82mm).

d. Disposition.
PW heard that the 348th Regt CP was located at PAMBURI (CT1010) on 24 Dec 50.

e. Intentions and Mission.
PW ’s mission was to find out the condition of the bridge, South of KORANGPO (CT1106), depth and thickness of ice of the IMJIN River, and enemy dispositions. PW heard from the Co Political Officer that they were to advance to SEOUL.

f. Knowledge of Other Units.
PW stated he heard that the 38th, 40th, 42nd, 50th and 66th CCF Armies and the 5th NK Corps are in North Korea. Exact locations unknown.

g. Morale.
PW stated that the morale was low due to lack of food and clothing and constant air raids by UN aircrafts.

h. Food Supplies.
Food was foraged locally mostly during the night to avoid UN aircrafts.
