ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 2855　13 January 1951

FIELD REPORT (528 MISPI – 0149)　28 November 1950

PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a student prior to entering the service. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

PW volunteered into the CAN 1 Jul 44 at SZECHWAN-SHENG, CHUNGCHING (四川省 重慶) and received two months of basic training. 15 Jan 49, PW was captured by the CCF at TIENTSIN (天津) and was immediately assigned to the 3rd Training Regt for three months of communist indoctrination. The 196th Div crossed the YALU River at ANTUNG on 26 Oct 50 and arrived at CHOLSAN (XE4203) by train on the same night. The 196th Div continued to travel on foot and arrived at NAMSI (XE9218) approx. 15 days later. PW’s Unit remained there for approx 7 days. The 586th Regt then departed NAMSI and arrived at TOKHWA-DONG (德化洞) on the following day. PW lost contact with his unit on 25 Nov 50, and was captured by unknown elements of the ROK Army.

The 66th Army was composed of the 196th, 197th, & 198 Divs, on Security Bn, one Signal Bn, one Mountain Gun Regt, one Engr Bn, and one Transportation Bn.

The 196th Div was composed of the 586th, 587th, 588th Inf Regts, one Security Co, one Signal Co, one Engr Co, and one Mountain Gun Bn.

The 586th Regt was composed of 3 Inf Bn, one Security Co, and one Reserved Co.

The 1st Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Cos and one HW Co. Each Rifle Co was composed of 3 Rifle Plats and one Mortar Plat.

The mountain Gun Bn, had 9 X 75 mm guns (U.S. make).

The Mountain Gun Regt of the 66th Army had 27 X 75 mm guns. These guns were transported by horses and trucks.

The HW Co of the 1st Bn had 3 HMGs and 3 X 82 mm mortars.

Each Rifle Plat had 2 LMGs.

Each Mortar Plat in the Rifle Cos had 3 X 60 mm mortars.

The Transportation Bn, 66th Army had approx. 10 trucks (make u/k) and unknown number of horsecars and horses.

Riflemen were armed with ’38 model Jap rifles, 79 model rifles and automatic rifles.

PW stated that the above equipment were brought to Korea and are presently being utilized, No recoilless weapons or rocket launchers were observed by PW.

PW stated that, while at ANTUNG, they were told their mission was to aid the NKA.

The 196th Div CP was located in the village of TOKHWA-DONG on 25 Nov 50. The 586th Regt CP was located approx. 4 km away from the Div CP(direction u/k).

While at NAMSI, PW heard from an officer that the 67th, 68th Army and the 4th Field Army were in Korea. PW also heard that Gen PENG, Tehual (彭德懷) was the supreme commander of the 4th Field Army and also the CG of all CCF Units in Korea. The CCF in Korea was known as the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Army.

PW observed six or seven NK tanks at NAMSI (date u/k)

His unit constructed defensive positions while at NAMSI (XE9218). Exact locations u/k, but it was somewhere in the hills.

Morale of PWs unit was low because of insufficient food, constant air strikes, and forced marches. PW stated that approx. 80% of the men in his unit had no desire to continue fighting.

Food and Ammo.

Food was procured locally. Approx 120 rds and 4 or 5 handgrenades were issued to each mand at NAMSI.
