1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was suffering from a cold at time of interrogation. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. PW was a farmer prior to entering service. PW was a Pfc while serving in the Chinese Nationalist Army. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army on 13 June 47 at KWANGTUNG and received approx one month of basic training. PW was captured by the Chinese Communist Army in Jun or Jul 48 at TUNGPEH, KIRIN-SHENG (東北吉林省) and was sent to HARBIN 17 Aug 48. PW remained in HARBIN for approx six months. Apr 49, PW was assigned to the 50th Army which was being activated at HARBIN. The 50th Army departed HARBIN Apr 49 and arrived at SZECHWAN-SHENG (四川省) Jun 49. There the 50th Army engaged the Nationalist Army in combat for approx three months. The 50th Army departed SZECHWAN-SHENG in Oct 49 and arrived at HOPEH (河北) in Jan 50. There, the 50th Army was engaged in agricultural work until 15 Sep 50. O/a 15 Sep 50, the 50th Army departed HOPEH on foot and arrived at HWAYIEN 20 Sep 50. From HWAYIEN, the 50th Army entrained and went to ANTUNG arriving 28 Sep 50. The 50th Army rested at ANTUNG for approx 15 days. The 50th Army then crossed the YALU River and entered SINUIJU (Date of crossing u/k) and remained there for two days. After four nights of marching, the 149th Div of the 50th Army arrived at SINSOK-TONG (hearsay from Co Comdr). (Whereabouts of other 2 Divs u/k). Three days later the 149th Div departed SINSOK-TONG and after four nights of marching arrived at SONCHON (XE6407) (hearsay from Co Comdr) where they were joined by the two other Divs of the 50th Army. After resting for seven days, the 50th Army (3 Divs) marched for two nights and arrived at an u/k location (IN: Believed to be CHONGJU (XD9095). PW deserted his unit approx five days ago and hid in the mountains and was captured 25 Nov 50.

b. Unit Organization and Strength.

Estimated original strength of the 50th Army is 30,000. Original strength of each Div was approx 8,000. Original Strength of the Arty Regt was approx 3,000. Original Strength of Administration and Transportation personnel (noncombatants) of the 50thArmy Hq was approx 3,000. Present strength u/k, but PW heard from Bn Comdr at SINSOK-TONG that the 50th Army suffered 100 casualties from air raids.
Each Regt consisted of 3 Bns. Each Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and 1 HMG Co.

c. Equipment.
The HMG Co had 4 HMGs (type u/k) and the officers were armed with pistols. Each Rifle Co has 8 LMGs and rifles.
The Arty Bn attached to each Div had 4 to 5 mortars (size u/k) and rifles. The Arty Regt attached to the 50th Army had 4 truck-drawn arty pieces. No tanks were observed. The 50th Army possessed 40 trucks (type u/k) and 10 jeeps (US make). No information on bazookas and recoilless rifles.

d. Disposition.
On 21 Nov 50. PW’s Bn Hq was located approx 2 km SW of CHONGJU (XD9095) in a dugout in the mountain, and the Regt’l CP was located approx 2 km S of the Bn Hq. The Div Hq was located approx 5 km W of the Regt’l CP on 20 Nov 50. Location of the 50th Army Hq u/k.

e. Communication.
Radios and telephones were used for communication between the Army Hq and Div Hq. Telephones were used between the Divs, Regts, and Bn. Communication between the Bns and Cos by messengers.

f. Knowledge of Other Units.
Approx 28 days ago he heard from Co Comdr at SINUIJU that the 42nd CCF Army was in Korea and PW personally talked to some CCF soldiers and learned that they were from the 39th and 66th Armies. Personnel of the 66th Army were dressed in very light green quilted winter uniforms with reenforced patches on the knee and sent of trousers and on the shoulders. Personnel of the 50th Army wore the same except there were no patches. The 39th Army troops wore green quilted uniforms.

h. Defensive Works and Fortifications.
PW’s unit dug trenches on the mountain side overlooking the roads in vic 2 to 5 km S and W of CHONGJU (XD9095)

i. Morale and Propaganda.
PW stated that all of the personnel of the 50th Army were formerly Chinese Nationalist soldiers. The morale among the recruits were low and they had no desire to fight, however, the veterans wanted to fight to the last. PW did not see any UN leaflets nor hear broadcasts from airplanes.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies.
Food was procured locally and was sufficient. PW received 80 rds and 4 hand grenades at ANTUNG prior to crossing the border. When PW’s unit crossed the border, 10 bags of millet per Co were brought by trucks from ANTUNG.

b. Replacements.
PW stated that there were no replacements in his unit. The wounded were sent to SINUIJU by trucks and by litter bearers for medical treatment and returned to their original unit upon recovering.

c. CCF Air Force.
PW observed an airfield located approx 2 km SW of the main ANTUNG RR Station. He observed 5 single engine planes which were painted yellowish white with red wing tips, nose, and tail and 5 red stars painted on the fuselage. (One (1) large star with four (4) small stars in a semi-circle).
