PW spoke freely and without hesitation. Information believed reliable.

PW entered the North Korean Army as a private in Jun 46 and was assigned to the 2nd platoon, 1st company of the 475th Engr Bn, 3rd Division. He received on the job training (no formal military schooling) in the duties of his platoon. He rose through the ranks to squad leader and assistant platoon leader. Mar 50 he as given a direct commission as junior lieutenant and assigned as platoon leader 2nd platoon of the Engineer Company, directly assigned to the 603rd Regiment. It was while serving with this unit, belonging to the Security Forces, that he was captured in Sep 50 in the vicinity of CHONGJU. PW gives the impression of being a qualified engineer platoon leader, well acquainted with engineer units and capable of fulfilling any mission which would be assigned to any platoon in his company.

a. This is the organization and equipment of the 475th Engr Bn which is assigned to the 3rd Division (NK) according to PW, a former junior lieutenant of engineer. This engineer battalion is composed of a Battalion Headquarters and identical engineer companies. Bn Hq has 11 officers and 1 EM with duties as follows: Bn CO, Bn executive Officer, Deputy for line unit, Deputy for operations, Deputy for administration, Paymaster, Athletic Officer, Doctor, 3 political officers and 1 EM. A typical engineer company is composed of a company headquarters and three platoons, the construction platoon, river crossing platoon and pioneer platoon.
