1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted his Co 300400 Dec 50 and was captured along the 38th Parallel at 300700 Dec 50. He planned to desert ever since his capture by CCF. Was in good physical condition and of average intelligence. PW stutters. Cooperative and information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW volunteered for the Chinese National Army at SUN DONG SONG GIMI 1 Apr 46. Received 3 months training at GIMI, stationed there 3 years. PWs unit fought the CCF off and on in vic of GIMI and May 50 his unit withdrew to FORMOSA. After 5 days in FORMOSA unit was sent to HAINAN Island where they were defeated by the CCF. On 8 May 50 PW was wounded and taken prisoner. Confined to a hospital until Oct 50 and upon release from the hospital PW was conscripted into CCF at KAISHEN. PW received 2 months of Communistic indoctrination and apprx 10 days of combat training (night combat, anti-tank and air defense). Oct 50 PW’s unit left KAIWHEN by rail to MANPOJIN (Korea) via SUPINJIN and TUNWHA (Manchuria). The entire 38th Army crossed the YALU River. Proceeded south via KANGGYE BA9737, HUICHON BV6749, TOKCHON BV6904, KAECHON YD 5696, KUNURI YD4998, and arrived YONCHON CT3118 on or about 23 Dec 50. PW’s unit stayed at KAECHON for apprx 10 days and at KUNURI for apprx 1 week. Always on the move at other times. Elements of 38th Army encountered opposition at HUICHON, KUYANG, KAECHON, TOKCHON and KUNURI. The 113th Div participated only at KAECHON. On the night of 23 Dec 339th Regt proceeded to the 38th parallel and deployed along this line. On the night of 24 Dec 339th Regt withdrew to a point apprx 4 miles SW of YONCHON due to heavy friendly air bombardment received that day. Casualties from the bombardment were from 7 to 10 KIA per company. 8th Co withdrew to mountains SW of YONCHON vic CT3115 and is presently located there. 7th and 9th Cos of 3rd Bn located over a small hill apprx 4000 meters behind 8th Co. PW stated that 3rd Bn waiting for supplies to continue their advance south. Present disposition of Regt or Div CP unknown. 24 Dec 38th Army CP located in POJANG SAN CT406115, but PW believes that the CPs moved after the air attack. PW saw apprx 30 NK troops camped near 8th Co area. PW stated that these NK troops were not part of the company. Presumed they were stragglers. 300400 Dec PW deserted his company and headed south. Captured by elements of 6th ROK Div.

b. Mission:
On 29 Dec PW heard from Company political leader that 8th Co was the forward element of 3rd Bn and their mission to attack. Was told not to worry because there were many troops behind them.
292200 Dec political leader announced to the company that a general all-out attack would be made by all CCF along the 38th parallel on 30 or 31 Dec at the latest by 1 Jan. 113th Div in the center has on its left the 112th Div and on the right the114th Div as of 26 Dec. The political leader also stated that the 42nd Army is to form the 1st line of attack, the 38th Army the 2nd line, and the 40th Army the 3rd line; and that there was 1 division and 1 regt confronting the 38th Army.

c. Organization of Unit:
8th Co: 110 men
3rd Bn: Approx 450 men
339th Regt: 1600 - 1900 men
113th Div: 337th, 338th and 339th Regts.
38th Army: 112th, 113th and 114th Divs.
Inf Bn composed of 3 Inf Cos and 1 HMG Co. HMG Co divided and assigned to each Infantry Co. Inf Regt composed of 3 Inf Bns and Arty Bn.

d. Weapons:
8th Co: 6 LMGs, 2 HMGs, 3 US made mortars (60mm?). All personnel armed with rifles or either Jap or US make. PWs plat ldr stated that there were 2 x 82mm mortars in the 3rd Bn, 4 x 45mm guns in the 113th Div, and 4 x 76mm (?) guns in the 38th Army.

e. Other Units:
PW heard that 39th, 40th, 42nd and 60th Army are in Korea. Composition unknown. PW heard that 3 armies comprise 1 field army and that 3 field armies are in Korea.

f. Ammo & Supply:
100 rds per rifle. Waiting for re-supply. Food obtained from various villages they occupy.

g. Morale:
About 60 percent of PW’s company former Chinese National troops. No desire to fight and are always thinking of deserting. Majority of men suffering from frost bite.

h. US POWs:
PW did not see any US POW but saw apprx 20 ROK Pws at TOKCHON in Nov 50 (date unk).

i. Propaganda Leaflets:
PW read UN leaflets: PW read UN leaflet at KANCHON, and was happy. Planned to desert his unit. Other former National Army personnel also have the same plan. The regular CCF personnel collect these leaflets - do not want them to read them.

j. PW’s Observation:
No tanks or heavy arty pieces recently seen near the 38th parallel. PW observed 4 small arty pieces (45mm?) being drawn by horses heading south toward the 38th parallel on the night of 23 Dec.

k. Enemy Tactics:
Company political officer stated that when the attack is initiated, the 42nd Army will comprise the first wave, 38th Army the 2nd wave, and the 40th Army the 3rd wave. Simultaneously, 1 division will go around the enemy flank to the rear to sever communication lines and supply routes.
