2. ASSESSMENT:
The PW had very limited knowledge of military activities, organization or related matters. Despite sincere attempts on his part to be cooperative, the information is limited but apparently reliable.
The PW was a CCF medic, and at his own personal risk, guided 3 US wounded PWs back to US lines o/a 24 Nov 50, and surrendered himself in doing so.
He claims that he is a devout Christian and is anti-communist. His mother and 2 brothers were allegedly killed by the communist during the execution of the land reform program in CHINA in 1948.
The PW speaks English fairly well and part of the interrogation was performed in English. The PW claims that he concealed his ability to speak English from the communists and consequently was not called on to perform any duties requiring its use.
The 3 rescued American PWs were evidently from the US 2nd Division in that a request has been relayed to extend the best treatment possible for this PW in gratitude for his service.

PW was formerly in the CNA 63rd Army.
PW was captured by the CCF 40th Army at HAINAN (海南島) Island on 7 Jun 50 and was assigned immediately to the CCF 40th Army, 118th Div, 354th Regt, 1st Bn, Medical Squad.

On 19 Oct 50, the entire 40th Army crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG and entered SINUIJU (XE2040).
After entering KOREA the 354th Regt marched nightly on secondary roads, hiding in hills during the days.
On 24 Nov 50, the 1st Bn, 354th Regt, engaged a US Force at an unknown place. PW, a medic, was left to care for 3 US soldiers (2 wounded) captured during the engagement. (This was the first engagement for this Bn.)
PW decided to desert the CCF, and, with 4 CCF soldiers (who did not know the PW’s intentions of surrendering), brought the 3 US wounded soldiers through CCF lines and surrendered to an unknown US Force on 241700 I Nov 50 at an unknown location.

Messengers (runners) were the most widely used means of communication and were used at all levels.
Telephones were used at battalion and higher echelons.

Morale of the troops with the 354th Regt was very low because 80% of the troops were former Nationalist soldiers. UN Air strikes and artillery were also causing alarm among the troops.
PW surrendered with a UN Safe Conduct Pass.
Troops were heavily guarded against retrieving any dropped in the area. PW believes that the leaflets will influence many to surrender.

11. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW is not a volunteer for Korean service but his unit (40th Army) was called a volunteer Army.
At MANCHURIA, PW, a medic, received 110,000 Yuan per month. All captured Nationalist soldiers and equipment were used by the capturing unit. Propaganda instruction by political officers to troops were as follows:
Uniform worn at time of interrogation: PW was wearing a worn-out OD (US) uniform with a Parka. These were issued to him somewhere in PYONGYANG on 1 December 1950. He also had a scarf given to him by one of the US PWs he led back to US lines. This clothing has obviously been given to him in gratitude for his returning the US troops to US lines.
