1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative. Information seems reliable. In view of the PW’s ability to remember name - places, that phase of this report seems quite reliable. PW appeared to be in good physical condition at the time of interrogation. Information is limited because of PW’s duty assignment.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTHS:
The 4th Field Army was composed of 12 Armies (38th, 39th, 40th, 41st, 42nd and other Armies).
38th Army composed of 112th, 113th, and 114th Divs.
114th Div composed of 340th, 341st, and 342nd Regts.
340th Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bns, and 2 Arty Btrys.
1st Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co, 1 60mm Mortar Co and 1 HMG Co.
3rd Co was composed of 3 Rifle Plats.
Each Rifle Plat was composed of 3 Rifle Sqds (about 12 men per sqd).
3rd Co, 1st Bn, 340th Regt:

  Remarks: The strength of the above Co was approx 130 men as of 21 Nov 50.

PW stated that there were two Heavy Weapons Cos attached to the 3rd Regiment.
Each Heavy Weapons Co had 3 mortars (type unk), 2 M92 Inf artillery guns (Jap) and 3 mountain guns (type and caliber unknown). Number of troops in the company unknown.
There was a North Korean interpreter in the PW’s Company, who came with them from MANCHURIA.
The PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.
PW observed approx ten (10) artillery pieces (model 38 field artillery - type & caliber unk) which were ox-drawn in the vicinity North of KUJAN (球場) o/a 11 Nov 50.
PW stated that his unit was the same former Chinese Communist unit (4th Field Army, 38th Army) here in KOREA as it was in CHINA.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
After crossing the YALU River from CHI-AN (輯安), MANCHURIA 24 Oct 50, the 114th Div arrived in the vicinity of TOKCHON-DONG (德川洞) after a 12 days march.
PW did not know whether or not units of the 38th Army were in defensive positions in the above area because he was with the 3rd Company (PW’s unit) as a mess sqd ldr.
PW believed that the Hq of the 114th Div was located on a mountain East of TOKCHON-DONG until he was captured on 21 Nov 50 (exact location unknown).
The Hq of the 340th Regt was located approx 2 Km NE of the PW’s 3rd Company.
While the PW’s company was advancing toward a mountain located NE of TOKCHON-DONG (exact location unk), PW was separated from his unit 21 Nov 50. After being separated from his unit, he was captured 9 hours later by ROK troops 211300 I Nov 50.
Disposition and activities of other units unknown.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 22 May 40 into the Nationalist Army at AN ANHWEI (安徽省).
Received approx 2 months of the infantry training at the above place.
The following are name places through which PW has travelled while in the CNA: AN ANHWEI, PUPEI (湖北), PANDONG (?), WAN SHENG (萬縣), CHUNGIN (重慶), CHU-SHENG (?), KUM MING (■明), INDIA (travelled by plane), KUMMING, UNNAN (雲南), FUNAN (湖南), NACHING (南京), CHINJU (錦州), PANSAN (盤山), KAIWEN in 1947.
The Nationalist Army fought against the 8th Route Army in KAIWEN where the PW was captured in Feb 48.
From KAIWEN, the PW was sent to SUPING (四平), where he was assigned to the 38th Army, 114th Div, 340th Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co.
PW received approx 3 months of infantry training with the above unit at SUPING.
With the unit, PW moved to CHANGCHUNG (長春) from SUPING Feb 48.
PW moved to MUKDEN from CHANGCHUNG Dec 48.
From MUKDEN, PW moved to FUAPEN (華北) Dec 49.
PW moved to TENJIN (天津) 30 Dec 49. From TENJIN to YECHANG (■昌), KUWAN SHI (■西), YUNNAN (雲南), FUNAN SHENG (湖南省) and KAIWEN.
On 21 Oct 50, the entire PW’s 340th Regt departed from KAIWEN by train and arrived at CHIAN on the same date. The unit crossed a bridge over the YALU (at night) and entered KOREA 24 Oct 50 at MANP’OJIN, KOREA.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of PW’s unit brought three days ration with them when they crossed the YALU.
They received about 10 days ration of millet at CHONGCHONG (前川) o/a 30 Oct 50.
PW did not know the amount but troops were issued small arms ammo at the same time and place.
After their 10 days rations were exhausted they confiscated food from nearby villages.

7. MORALE:
Morale of PW’s unit was low due to the lack of food and constant UN air raids after entering KOREA.

8. SINGLA COMMUNICATION:
1 Field telephone in each Rifle Co. Below the company level, runners were used.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION:
The PW was not a volunteer for Korean service.
No instructions were given to CCF soldiers to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW did not know anything of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
There were no Japanese units in the CCF.
Former Nationalist soldiers became CCF soldiers. Captured equipment is utilized by CCF troops in the present war.
