FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1289) 15 December 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and spoke freely. Information seems reliable.

3. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW heard, o/a 5 Dec 50, that the II Corps Hq was located at ORGORWON (CT4334).
PW heard, 13 Dec 50, that the 9th Div was located in the YONCHON (CT3117) area.
PW heard, 13 Dec 50, that the 18th Regt, 4th Div was enroute to SIBYON-NI (BT9941).
PW heard, 13 Dec 50, that the Ind 8th Regt Hq was located at MAJANG MYON (CT2341) with the1st Bn, Ind 8th Regt.
The 3rd Bn, Ind 8th Regt was located near CHOK KOL LI, 12 Km NW of YONCHON.
The mission of the Ind 8th Regt was constructing obstacle road blocks of felled trees and ditches on the main route of approach to the CHORWON area.
The mission of II Corps was to defend their area until the CCF attacked. After the CCF attacked, the units of the II Corps were to cut the route of withdrawal of the UN Force.
PW observed, o/a 5 Dec 50, a 20-men guerrilla unit armed with 1 BAR, 1 LMG (USSR), and rifles at CHUNG MYON (CT2724).
O/a 10 Dec 50, PW heard from a refugee that Chinese Communist Troops are in SINGYE (BT8564).

4. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the NKA at SEOUL, during the middle of Aug 50 and was assigned to the 16th Bn, “LIBERATED AREA SPECIAL SECURITY HQ.” During late Aug 50, the 16th Bn departed SEOUL and marched to CHONGSONG (ER1040). While enroute to CHONGSONG, the 16th Bn was integrated into the 101st Security Regt.
Elements (approx 200 men) of the 101st Regt retreated from CHONGSONG and traveled by ANDONG (DR7446) and YONGJU (DR6574) to TAEBAEK mountain range into N KOREA, entering N KOREA during late Sep 50.
PW deserted his unit in N KOREA and was trying to reach home when he was apprehended by NK Security Police and taken to ICHON MYON (CT2761) during Oct 50.
PW was assigned to the Ind 8th Regt which was organized 31 Oct 50 at ICHON MYON.
The Ind 8th Regt marched to CHOK KOL LI.
PW and 5 others were assigned duty at an observation post near CHOK KOL LI, 13 Dec 50. They deserted their position with the intention of surrendering.
Observing ROK troops, they came out with their hands up, but they were fired on. Two men fled but 4 surrendered.

5. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF PW’S UNIT:
The Ind 8th Inf Regt was composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Inf Bn’s, 1 Gd Plat and 1 Sig Unit.
The 3rd Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co’s and 1 Hv Wpn Co.

  Due to a shortage of weapons, only 50% of the troops with the 3rd Rifle Co carried weapons. Pers strength of other rifle Co’s of Ind 8th Inf Regt were believed to be the same as the 3rd Co, 3rd Bn. All troops of other rifle Co’s carried weapons.

PW believes that the II NKA Corps was composed of the 4th, 6th, 9th and 15th Div’s and the Ind 8th Inf Regt.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained locally from the village People’s Committee. Food was adequate and troops of Ind 8th Regt ate three meals daily.
Ammo (small arms) was very scarce. Civilians in villages were used at times to pick up any ammo which could be found because this was the only means of getting any ammo.
Approx 2,000 rounds of 105mm and 60mm ammo, which the retreating ROK Unit left behind at ICHON (CT2761), 1 Nov 50, were buried on the southern slope of a hill located directly North of the highway at a point 4 Km W (by road) from ICHON leading from ICHON to HWACHON (CT8718).

8. MORALE:
Morale of the Ind 8th Regt troops was low because of the cold, as only 30% of the men were equipped with winter clothing.

9. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
The Ind 8th Regt was equipped with telephones but their use was very limited because of the lack of wire.
Runners were used as the chief means of communication.

10. PYSCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
A. Did you surrender voluntarily? Yes.
If so, why? Because PW was a S Korean and wanted to go home instead of fighting a hopeless war.
B. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcast? No.
C. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? Yes. What did they say or do? Majority of the North Korean did not believe the UN leaflets. They believed what their superior told them that they will be killed if captured.
