FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1269) 29 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but he was confused. Report seems unreliable.

3. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW volunteered into the CCF 50th Army, 149th Div, 447th Regt, 1st Bn in Jan 49 at HSI FENG HSIEN, PING KANG because he was constantly nagged by the town officials.
Underwent one month of close order drill at HSI FENG, HSIEN, PING KANG.
50th Army left HSI FENG HSEN, PING KANG by train and arrived at HU PEN SHENG (湖北省) in March 49.
50th Army left HU PEH SHENG by foot in March 49 and arrived at SUCHWAN (四川) March 49.
The 50th Army left SUCHWAN by foot in April 49 and arrived at HUPEH SHENG in April 49. Here, they repaired canal walls and cultivated farm land.
447th Regt left HUPEH SHENG in Sep 50 by train and arrived at HSI FENG HSIEN, PING KANG in Oct 50.
447th Regt left HSI FENG HSIEN, PING KANG on 3 Nov 50 by train and arrived at ANTUNG (安東) on 4 Nov 50.
447th Regt left ANTUNG on 5 Nov 50 and crossed the steel bridge over the YALU River by foot. After walking for 16 Kms the Regt arrived at a mountain which had 3 or 4 farm houses. PW claims that he did not pass any large city.
PW did not know the route and places he travelled through in Korea.
PW was captured on 26 Nov 50 in a mountain (according to PW’s tag, location of capture was written as XD 957977 by 21st Regt).
PW did not see other CCF units while in Korea.
PW’s unit did not participate in the HAINAN Island invasion.

PW stated that there were 4 x field Armies (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th).

5. T/O & E of Higher Echelon - Negative
PW stated that after they crossed the YALU River, one NK soldier was assigned to each Co as an interpreter.
PW’s unit is intact and under same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
No parts of PW’s unit have been integrated into Korean units.
PW did not see any artillery pieces since crossing the YALU River; however, he did see 3 mountain guns in his division while in CHINA.

6. LOCATIONS & ACTIVITIES OF UNTIS: (as of 26 Nov 50).
Mission of PW’s unit was unknown.
PW did not know why he came to Korea.
PW did not know what other units came to Korea.
On 26 Nov 50, while his Co was retreating to an unknown area, PW deserted his unit after discarding the ammo, clothing and food supplies which he was carrying. PW surrendered on 26 Nov 50 to American troops. Whereabouts of his unit was unknown.
PW’s unit did not construct any defense positions while traveling southward from the YALU River.

FOOD & AMMUNITION SUPPLIES:
Soldiers brought 2 days ration, when they crossed the YALU River.
After the rations were gone, soldiers received food, but source was unknown.

9. MORALE:
The morale in PW’s Co was low because they lacked ammo and food supplies. Most of them did not want to fight.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service nor was his unit.
No instructions had been given to CCF soldiers to appear to be volunteers if captured.
PW’s unit did not undergo any amphibious training.
PW did not know of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
There were no Japanese units in the CCF.
The CCF does not have Militia and Public Security units in addition to their regular troops.
PW received 100,000 Yuan per month; wages for others, unknown.
PW did not know of any CCF units with Soviet equipment.
PW did not know of any paratroop training or paratroopers in the CCF.
While in Korea, soldiers and officers slept in foxholes camouflaged with grasses.
Political officers taught soldiers to read and write Chinese characters.
