1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHIANG, Te Hsi (蔣德喜) (Chinese)

ORGANIZATION: 4th Field Army, 50th Army, 148th Div, 442nd Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 3rd Plat, 8th Sqd (第四野戰軍 50軍 148師 442團 1營 2連 3排 8班)
DUTIES: Rifleman (步兵)
EDUCATION: Primary School (3 years)

OCCUPATION: Farmer

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and willing to talk, however, information is limited.
PW was unfamiliar with place names in KOREA.
He was in a good physical condition at time of interrogation.
The information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army, 50th Army, 148th Div, 442nd Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 3rd Plat, 8th Sqd.
The 4th Field Army was composed of the 50th Army and other Armies.
The 50th Army was composed of 3 Infantry Divisions (148th, 149th & 150th).
The 148th Division was composed of 3 Infantry Regiments (442nd, 443rd and 444th).
The 442nd Regiment was composed of 3 Infantry Battalions.
The 1st Battalion was composed of 3 Infantry Companies and LMG Co.
The 2nd Company was composed of 3 Rifle Platoons (1st, 2nd and 3rd).
The 3rd Platoon was composed of 3 Rifle Squads (7th, 8th and 9th).
The 8th Squad consisted of nine (9) men.

REMARKS: PW stated that the two boxes of dynamite were brought to KOREA but the purpose and use was unknown (it had never been used in combat or otherwise).

REMARKS: No detailed information concerning the above unit. PW insists that he observed only LMG’s.
1st Battalion, 442nd Regiment
Personnel: EM and Officers - Approx 490 men
There were two North Korean interpreters in the PW’s unit, who joined them after crossing the YALU River.
The PW’s unit is intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
PW did not know the strengths of the Division and Army.
Parts of the PW’s unit had never been integrated into Korean units.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
After the entire 442nd Regiment crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG (安東) 26 Oct 50, the PW travelled with the 1st Battalion South.
After travelling approximately a month, during nights, the 1st Battalion arrived at an unknown location (date unknown).
PW stated that the 1st Battalion had never engaged in preparing defensive positions while travelling south.
When the 1st Battalion advanced, the PW was left behind because of illness. After searching for his unit for approximately 3 days, the PW was captured by ROK troops at an unknown location on 251500 I Nov 50.
The 1st Battalion was never engaged in battle with UN troops up to the time PW was separated o/a 19 Nov 50.
No information concerning other units of the 442nd Regiment, 148th Division, 50th Army.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 7 Jun 49 into the Nationalist Army at SZECHUWAN SHENG (四川省).
Departed from SZECHUWAN SHENG by truck and arrived at CHENG TU (成都) in Jun 49. Captured by the 4th Field Army, 50th Army at CHENG-TU on 14 Oct 49.
Departed from CHENG-TU by foot and arrived at HOPEH SHENG (湖北省). Engaged in farming with the unit for approximately 6 months there.
Departed with the 4th Field Army, 50th Army, 148th Div, 442nd Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 3rd Plat, 8th Sqd from HOPEH SHENG on foot and arrived at RYOTUNG SHENG (遼東省) in MANCHURIA in Oct 50.
The entire 442nd Regiment departed from RYOTUNG SHENG by train and arrived at ANTUNG in Oct 50. They crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG on foot on 17 Oct 50. Proceeded south and arrived at an unknown location in KOREA after travelling 30 days during nights.
The PW’s unit (the 442nd Regiment) departed for KOREA from RYOTUNG SHENG (遼東省). The entire 442nd Regiment came to KOREA.
PW did not know of any other CCF units in KOREA on his trip to KOREA.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LIM, Piao (林彪), unknown, Commanding General, 4th Field Army.
PW did not see any Soviet advisors in PW’s unit.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of the 442nd Regiment brought over 3 days ration of rice with them when they crossed the YALU River. After their rations were exhausted, they obtained their food locally (mostly confiscated food).
PW issued 60 rounds of small arm ammo at HOPEI SHENG (湖北省) Jan 50. No additional issue.

8. MORALE:
Morale of the PW’s unit (1st Battalion) was low due to the lack of food, weapons, and forced marches. Furthermore, a majority of troops did not want to come to fight in KOREA.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
There was only 1 Field telephone used between the battalion and the Division. Below the Company level, messengers were employed.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service.
PW did not know of anything about the Iron & Steel Brigade.
The CCF did not use any Japanese units.
Pay Rate: Pvt (戰士): 10,000 Yuan per month
Squad Leader (班長): 10,000 Yuan per month
Former Nationalist soldiers were conscripted into the CCF. Captured equipment is utilized in the present time.
