FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI – 0127) 26 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Contacted flu approx is days ago. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Due to language difficulties (Canton Dialect) evaluation of information should be assessed accordingly. During course of interrogation Chinese characters utilized. PW held the rank of Private First Class in the Nationalist Army. PW was engaged in farming prior to entering service. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was drafted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at KOANTUNG 13 Jun 47. Captured by elements of CCF at TONGPEI, CHILINSON 17 Jun 48. Assigned to 1st Bn, 3rd Co, 7th Plat (Div unk) at HARBIN 8 Aug 48. Stationed here for approx 6 months and performed fatigue duties. Departed HARBIN on or about Apr 49 and arrived SUCHON Jun 49. Assigned to 50th Army, 149th Div, 446th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co. PW stated that 50th Army was organized at this time. 50th Army (148th, 149th and 150th Divs) engaged the Chinese Nationalist Army for approx 3 months at SUNCHON. Arrived HOPEI Jan 50. From Jan 50 (day unk) to 20 Sep 50, entire 50th Army was mobilized and engaged in farming at this loation. 149th Div departed HOPEI on or about 20 Sep 50 for ANTUNG via SANDONG, SANHAIKWAN. PW stated that 148th Div departed on or about 19 Sep 50 and 150th Div departed 21 Sep 50. Detrained at ANTUNG approx 8 days later. After arriving in ANTUNG the 148th, 149th, and 150th Divs regrouped. Stayed at ANTUNG for approx 15 days. During this period the 3 divisions rested. PW stated that the entire. 50th Army (148th, 149th and 150th divs) crossed into North KOREA via SINUIJU. 148th Div led crossing. Date of crossing unknown. Observed no tanks during crossing. After crossing rested for 1 day at SINUIJU. Marched to unknown destinations at nights and hid in mountains during daylight hours. PW stated that approx 15 days after crossing received air attack Suffered 10 or more casualties. No-knowledge of locations and directions traveled after crossing into NK.

b. PW’s Unit or Group:
PW stated 50th Army composed of 148th Div (442nd, 443rd and 444th Regts), 149th Div (445th, 446th and 447th Regts), 150th Div (448th, 449th and 450th Regts), and 1 Arty Regt. Strength of 50th Army approx 30,000. Strength of each division approx 8,000. Strength of Arty Regt approx 6,000. Strength of each Inf Regt approx 2,000. 1 Arty Bn composed of 2,000 men attached to each division. Each Bn composed of approx 600 men (3 Inf Co’s & HMG Co). 180 men in each company.

Weapons:
Weapons in Arty Regt unknown, 4 HMGs and 24 LMGs in each Bn. 8 LMGs to each Inf Co. HMG Co equipped with 4 HMGs. 4 trench mortars (cal unk) in Regt. No knowledge of other heavy weapons. All others armed with type 79 rifle (manufactured in CHINA) and US made rifles.
PW stated that 5th Co was located 2 miles north from place of capture. 2nd Bn located approx 2/3 mile north from Co. 446th Regt located 1 mile north from 2nd Bn. 149th Div located 2 1/3 miles north from Regt.

c. Other Units:
PW heard from Plat leader that 39th Army, 42nd Army, and 66th Army crossed into North KOREA at SINUIJU soon after crossing of 50th Army, PW stated that troops of 39th Army dressed in olive drab quilted uniforms. Personnel of 42nd Army dressed in North Korean quilted uniforms. Troops of the 66th Army dressed in khaki colored quilted uniforms. Trousers have extra patches sewed on knees and seats, 50th Army troops dressed in khaki colored quilted (invisible stitchings) uniforms without the extra patches.

d. Food & Supply:
Received 80 rds of ammo and 4 hand grenades prior to crossing into NK. No ammo issued after crossing. Rice supplied by NK Army. Approx 50 truck loads of millet (kaoliang) was hauled into NK. Food sufficient. 2 meals per day.

e. Morale:
Morale of troops low. PW stated majority of the ex-Nationalist troops have no desire to fight.

4. GENERAL:
PW observed airfield at ANTUNG and SINUIJU approx 1 month ago. 10 fighter planes at ANTUNG observed by PW. No planes observed at SINUIJU.
No knowledge of dismantling Hydro-electric plants.
