FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 1247)　19 December 1950

PW intelligent. Reliability, fair.

14 May 31: Born at HAEJU (海州) KOREA. Graduated primary school. Worked as an electrician for 4 months 1947.

Dec 48: Ran away to ANTUNG (安東) MANCHURIA with mother to evade a Sake (酒) blackmarket charge. Caught and put in prison with mother.

10 Aug 50: Returned to KOREA and forced to join NK Arny at WONSAN (元山) KOREA on 14 Aug 50. PW was assigned to 3500th Signal Unit here. Retreated to guerrilla hideout 20 Sep 50. Surrendered to the ROK Army on 27 Oct 50.

Around the PONGUI (鳳義山) Mountains about 10 km E of CHORWON (鉄原) KOREA.

PW hid on the hill with the guerrilla unit during period 20 Sep 50 - 27 Oct 50.

Orders came to the guerrilla headquarters from the Chairman of the Labor Party of KANGWONDO (江原道 勞動党 委員長) who worked directly under the NK leader KIM, Il Song (金日成).

They had wireless transmitters and receivers, telegraphs and walkie-talkie's.

PW was in an engineer unit whose duty was to sabotage railroad and communication systems.

The equipment they had was of US and Russian make. Weapons were:

SMG - PPhs 1941 Tommy Gun (Russian)

Grease gun - (US) Sub machine gm M-2

SMG PPhS 1943 - type without stock - made in KOREA

LMG - (Both US Md Russian)

HMG - (Both US and Russian)

Rifles and Carbines (US)

ASHI rifles and Carbines - Russia (sic)

Antitank rifle - Russian

Antitank grenade (Russian and US).

Offensive and Defensive grenades (Russian and US)

Mortars - caliber unknown (US and Russian)

Land Mines (metal) - Both contact and plunger type

PW heard that they had tanks and artillery pieces in the mountains but he never saw any. They also had trucks mostly US make.

The guerrilla unit operated between the PONGUI (鳳義山) Mountains and CHANGBAEK (長白山) Mountains.

They had code names for certain places such as:

TAEJON (大田) - KUMGANG (錦江)

NONSAN (論山) - HAN River (漢江)

CHONJU (全州) - HALLA Mountains (漢拏山)

KUNSAN (群山) - CHONGCH'ON River (淸川江)

PW states that they had en unlimited supply of arms and ammunition in the mountains. Also they had a large quantity of money looted from the places they had raided.
