FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0353) 11 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
PW enlisted in the CNA 1946, and was captured by the CCF at SHANGHAI 1949. PW stated that the entire 89th Div crossed the YALU River at ANTUNG o/a 11 Oct 50. The 266th Regt followed the YALU River northeasterly on the Korean side, for approx 2 weeks walking during the night. Regt contacted elements of the UN forces on three occasions, o/a 1 Nov 50, 6 Nov 50 and 9 Nov 50. (location of contact unknown) PW was captured by the Americans when his unit was contacted by the UN forces o/a 9th Nov 50. Did not observe any safe conduct leaflets. No knowledge of enemy intentions.

4. WEAPONS AND PERSONNEL:
The 89th Div was under the 20th Army and consisted of the 265th, 266th and 267th Regts. See breakdown sketch for the 266th Regt.
Regt had 3 Bns, HQ Co and an 82mm mortar Co. Each Bn had 3 rifle Cos and a Hvy Wpn Co. Bn strength was approx 500. A Med Plat (12 men) was attached to each Bn. Rifle Co strength was approx 120 men armed with Chinese rifles and 80 rds of ammo each. Each man had 3 hand grenades. There were 8 LMGs (Japanese) with 4/000 rds of ammo per LMG to each rifle Co. Strength of Hvy Wpn Co was approx 140 men (unarmed), and had 4 x 60mm mortars (1000 rds per mortar?) carried on mules and ammo bearers. The 82mm mortar Co consisted of 7 x 82mm mortars and 140 men (unarmed). Each Bn had approx 20 mules to carry ammo. Regt HQ had approx 20 trucks (Chinese make).

5. CASUALTIES:
The 3rd Bn lost 40 men (KIA) o/a 1 Nov 50 in their first contact with the UN forces. O/a 6 Nov 50 they lost 3 men to small arms fire. O/a 9 Nov 50, 10 men were killed in an air attack and by small arms fire when they contacted UN forces.

WEATHER CASUALTIES:
Approx half of the men in the 3rd Bn suffered frost bitten feet. Approx 60% of the men suffering frost bites were unable to walk. They were sent back to the rear or became deserters. Approx 20% had frost bitten hands.

6. SUPPLIES:
Regt received supplies 3 times since entering KOREA from MANCHURIA. The 20 trucks attached to the Regt were sent to ANTUNG (安東) and brought back rice on two occasions and ammo on one occasion. The 20 truck convoy traveled only at night.

7. PARATROOP TRAILING:
PW stated that in the fall of 1949 while the Regt was at SHANGHAI, 2 men were picked from each Co for paratroop training. They were given a physical examination and a mental test before being selected. Place of training unk,

8. UN PWs:
PW stated that the 8th Co, 266th Regt took approx 50 US PWs when the Co contacted elements of the US forces in a close range fire fight o/a 1 Nov 50. Two of the PWs were wounded in the arms. US PWs were dressed in parkas and arctic caps. Two Capts were seen in the group of US PWs. Does not know the location. Heard from Co CO that these PWs were to be sent to SHANGHAI (上海), PUKAO (浦口) or NANKING (南北) by train. PW stated that US PWs were given good treatment.

9. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
PW stated that the 89th Div was known for its superiority in suicidal charges. The men were thoroughly indoctrinated on communism and to sacrifice one's life for it was an honor. No narcotics or alcohol was given before actual charges were made.
Morale was low due to insufficient amount of food. They were fed only twice a day. They were not fed for 2 days on one occasion.
CCF AF: PW heard from the Co CO that there are approx 1,000 planes of various types at TSINAN (済南) and 1,400 at SHANGHAI. Planes are said to be of Chinese make.
