FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0186) 23 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: UO Tsu Chai (吳子齐)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW unable to read or write. He received approximately 5 months of basic training and was sent into KOREA with the 9th Regt. He was unable to recall the place names or route travelled in KOREA. Further interrogation is not recommended.

3. TO/E, DISPOSITION:
PW inducted into the 38th Army at MUKDEN Jun 50 (strength 60,000). He received approximately 5 months of basic training. O/a 15 Aug 50, the 38th Army departed MUKDEN and arrived at TUNHWA o/a 21 Aug 50. Separating from the 114th Div, the 9th Regt crossed the border Nov 50 and marched down south on the main road at night for approximately 7 nights (strength approximately 2,000), average 24 Km per night. They arrived in a mountain o/a 15 Nov 50 (location unknown). Three days later they were attacked by ROK units and while his unit retreated he remained behind and was captured. At the time of capture he was carrying approximately 300 rounds of LMG ammunition which he surrendered.
The 9th Regt consisted of approximately 2,000 men. One squad consisted of approximately 16 men.
They were armed as follows: (SIC)
1 - LMG 1 Squad-1,000 rounds per gun
6 - HMG 1 Squad-2,000 rounds per gun
1 - 82mm 1 Company-8 boxes (4 rounds per box)
4 or 5 files 1 Squad-300 rounds per rifle
The above weapons and ammunition were manufactured in MUKDEN and carried into KOREA.
Rations were purchased in KOREA with the money which the Supply Section brough from MUKDEN.
They were issued one set of uniform at MUKDEN and did not receive any resupply after departing MUKDEN.
They utilized telephones for communication. There was one portable radio-telephone per Bn. He heard from his squad leader that they were able to contact the NKA by radio.
PW stated that transportation was by horse carts which they had brought from MUKDEN.
He heard from his squad leader who, just before being KIA (o/a 14 Nov 50) stated that since we are retreating we might go back to MUKDEN in which PW believes that the 38th Army Hq is still located there.
PW heard from his squad leader that their mission was to guard the YALU River, however, reasons for entering KOREA was unknown. He just followed orders from his squad leader.

OTHER UNITS:
PW did not hear of any other unit enter KOREA from CHINA or any units of the NKA in the vicinity.

4. ENEMY LOSSES:
They did not receive any replacement of personnel or equipment.

5. PERSONALITIES:
PW stated that officers were known by their duty title and did not know what rank the officers held or their names. The officers wore uniforms with red piping which separated them from the enlisted men.

6. MISCELLANEOUS:
PW stated that his unit marched at night with 2 Inf Cos leading and a HMG Co and a Mortar Plat with 2 mortars following. An infantry company and the Bn Hq brought up the rear.
