ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and seemed fairly intelligent. He answered questions readily, estimation of distances and direction was good. Information is considered reliable.

CHRONOLOGY:
Born in SHANYUANPU (三源浦), MANCHURIA. Attended 2 yrs of middle school at SHANYUANPU (三源浦), MANCHURIA
Jun 46 - Volunteered for the CCF at SHANYUANPU (三源浦) and was sent to TUNGHUA (通化), MANCHURIA.
Jun 46 - Jul 46 - Assigned as a clerk at the LI, Hung Kuang (李紅光) Div Headquarters.
Jul 46 - Transferred to the 8th Regt, 6th Bn, 12th Co, 2nd Plat, 1st Sqd.
Jul 46 - Jul 47 - Assigned as a squad leader.
Jul 47 - Aug 48 - Transferred to the Railroad Police Unit and assigned the duty of guarding railroads and bridges in TUNGHUA (通化), LINCHIANG (臨江), CHILIN (吉林), HSIAN (西安), and MEIHOKOU (梅河口), MANCHURIA.
Aug 48 - Sep 48 - Went into the Peoples Army at NANAM (羅南), KOREA and assigned to the 5th Div, 3rd Regt, 9th Co, 1st Plat, 3rd Sqd.

FORMER CHINESE COMMUNIST UNIT:
LI, Hung Kuang (李紅光) Division:
(a) Company - Composed of 3 platoons. Each platoon consisted of 30 - 35 men and 2 officers. All three were rifle platoons and each platoon had one light machine gun. Riflemen were armed with the "Meiji 38" and "Model 99" rifles.
(b) Battalion - Composed of 3 companies. In each Co there were about 10 officers. Of the 3 companies, 2 were rifle and one was a heavy machine gun company. Each rifle company had 3 light machine guns. The heavy machine gun company had about 6 heavy machine guns.
(c) Regiment - Composed of 3 battalions. Of the 3 battalions, 2 were rifle battalions, and the other was divided into one engineer Co, one heavy machine gun Co and one mortar Co. Number of weapons in each Co was unknown.
(d) Dlvision - Composed of 3 regiments.

LOCATION OF UNIT AT TIME OF DEPARTURE FOR KOREA:
CHANGCHUN (長春), MANCHURIA.

UNIT COMPLEMENT SENT TO KOREA:
Entire unit was transferred to KOREA (about 1,000 men) (sic).

CCF UNITS IN CHINA:
PW observed the CCF 7, 8 and 9th Divisions in the TUNGHUA (通化) area in 1948.

RECRUITING PROGRAM:
Most of the men who went into the CCF during the 1946 - 48 period were volunteers.

PAY OF PERSONNEL:
PW received 5 yuan (Chinese money) per month in 1946. When promoted to NCO (Sgt), he received 900 yuan. Platoon leaders received about 1,500 yuan in 1948.

SOVIET ADVISORS:
PW observed Russian officers while he was taking training in NANAM (羅南), KOREA. There was one Russian officer to each Regt.

SOVIET EQUIPMENT:
In 1949, all CCF weapons were exchanged for Russian made weapons. PW observed such weapons as the TT-1930 Auto. pistol, PPSH M-1941 Sub-machine gun, DO light machine gun, M-1910 heavy machine gun and mortars.

RATIONS AND CLOTHING:
PW received 2 sets of summer uniforms with one pair of canvas shoes, one set of winter uniform with overcoat, and one pair of leather boots. The food in 1948 was very good. They received pork once a day with vegetables, usually kaoliang or rice.

PROPAGANDA:
PW volunteered for the CCF after being indoctrinated by Communis propaganda, He heard that the Communist government would divide all the wealth among the people and that everyone would have an equal share. Since the PW's family was very poor he believed the propaganda.
