FIELD REPORT (528 - MISPI - 0138) 24 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW had a broken left ankle and a bullet wound in his left leg. PW spoke freely and was of average intelligence, however, due to PW's physical condition information was limited. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW volunteered into the Chinese Communist Army at HUPEH-SHENG(湖北省) Dec 49, and assigned to the 40th Army, 120th Div. 19 Oct 50, the 40th Army crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG and marched to KUSONG(XE9228) arriving in approx five days. From KUSONG, 40th Army marched to TAECHON(YE1322) arriving the same day. From TAECHON, the 118th Div of the 40th Army departed for HUICHON (BV6849) and the 120th Div for UNSAN (YE3928). Destination of the 119th Div unk. At UNSAN, the 120th Div engaged the 6th ROK Div. 360th Regt of the 120th Div remained in UNSAN Area and the 358th and 359th Regts advanced to YONGBYON (YE 4011). O/a 20 Nov 50, one Sqd (12 men) of the Recon Co was sent on a Recon mission and PW was wounded and left behind. PW crawled to a nearby village and was later captured by US troops 23 Nov 50 in vic on YONSAN-MYON (YE3702).

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
The 40th Army consisted of the 118th, 119th and 120th Divs. The 118th Div consisted of the 352nd, 353rd and 354th Regts. The 119th Div consisted of the 355th, 356th and 357th Regts. The 120th Div consisted of 358th, 359th and 360th Regts, Engr Bn, Sig Co and Recon Co. Each Regt consisted of 3 Bns with 3 Cos in each Bn. Each Co consisted of 3 Rifle Plats and a Mortar Plat.
Strength of the 40th Army, approx 48,000; Div, approx 13,000; and Regt, approx 3,000. Strength of Recon Co was 130 when crossing the border. Present strength approx 110.

c. Equipment:
The Recon Co was equipped with 9 LMGs, 3x60mm mortars, approx 20 US SMGs, approx 5 binoculars, and unk number of Jap M38 rifles. Each man also carried 4 hand grenades.

d. Disposition
PW stated that the 120th Div Hq was located in a mountain SW of ONJONG (YE48844) (exact location unk) o/a 20 Nov 50.

e. Armor and Artillery
No tanks or arty pieces were observed in the 40th Army since crossing the border.

f. Knowledge of Other Units
PW stated that he heard the 39th Army had also crossed the border at a location further north from ANTUNG date unk.

h. Morale:
Approx 80 men in his Co were communists and that their morale was high. Many soldiers picked up "surrender leaflets" but destroyed them for fear of being caught by their superiors. Every day the men were repeatedly told not to surrender. He heard broadcasts from airplanes but could not understand them.
