2. ASSESSMENT:
PW did not seem very intelligent; hesitant: at times. Education: 6 yrs. Appointed Lt due to length of service. Reliability: Fair.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
11 Dec 46: Entered Security Cadet School at NANAM. 10,000 cadets; about 20 yrs old. Was promised release after 3 mos trng, but all cadets kept in school. 1 Russ officer attached to Co; 1 to Bn; 3 to regt; and 5 to div; highest ranking officer, Col. They trained with Jap rifles at first, but in Mar 47, each Co issued 12 LMGs, 2 HMGs and all men given Russ rifles.
8 Feb 48: Cadet School integrated into NKA; designated 2nd Div, 5th and 6th Regts; in addition there were 5 Hqs and service Bns. Arty Regt at KANGDOK (康德) (4 km N of NANAM); 4th Regt at HOERYONG (會寧).
30 Aug 48: PW went to NAMPO SI (南浦市) and attached to Guard Co, #2 Political School. Students attended this school from 2 mos to 1 yr and commissioned 1st Lt upon graduation. 80% of instructors Koreans (Communistic indoctrination in USSR) and the rest Russians.
Nov 48: Political School transferred to P’YONGYANG; Guard Co accompanied.
Dec 48: School again transferred to MANGYONG (萬暻).
Sep 49: PW went to NAMPO SI and attached to 42nd Coastal Defense Regt (955 Unit): 4 Bns; each Bn 700 men.
22 May 50: Appointed Plat Ldr; Jr Lt.
14 Jul 50: PW went to KANGDOK (康德) with other NCOs and officers of 956 Unit and attached to 507 Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co, 3rd Plat. This unit was activated 7 Jul 50 and was composed of student recruits from 16-24 yrs of age. 2nd Bn at SONGJIN and whereabouts of 3rd Bn unknown.
14 Aug 50: PW’s 3rd Co, 1st Bn dispatched to CHUUL (朱乙) for coastal patrol duty (156 men).
13 Oct 50: Ragtl Hqs and 1st and 2nd Cos, 1st Bn went to KILCHU (吉州). Regt redesigdated 507th Brigade; reorganized to strength of approx 8,000 men (9 Bns).
15 Nov 50: 3rd Co, 1st Bn arrived KILCHU from CHUUL and joined 507th Brig in retreat.
16. Nov 50: Unit arrived KOCHAM (ZA 3248); 4th Bn engaged enemy for 1 day.
17 Nov 50: Unit arrived KUKTON (極洞) and departed during evening for PONGGANG (鳳岡).
18 Nov 50: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Bns arrived PONGGANG. 3rd and 4th Bns integrated as 4th Bn. Strength: 600 men.
21 Nov 50: 1st and 2nd Bns arrived CHUUL and integrated as 2nd Bn. Strength: 600 men.
22 Nov 50: 2nd Bn arrived PONGGANG as reserve unit; engaged in fire fight. Relieved by 41st Div units and withdrew to SONGJON (城町) where MUSAN Security Bn (259 men) was assimilated into 2nd Bn. Strength: 800 men.
23 Nov 50: 2nd Bn arrived NANAM; engaged in fire fight; retreated to SONGJON.
24 Nov 50: 2nd Bn dispatched to Hill 303; 3rd Plat sent as advance party 2 km S of Hill 303. PW and 35 men captured.

4. ORGANIZATION, PERSONNEL & WEAPONS:
597th Brig: 13 Oct 50:
Composed of 4 Inf Bns, 2 Arty Bns (76mm guns), Sig Bn, Med Bn, Engr Bn, and Hqs and service units.
Each Inf Bn: Composed of 3 Inf Cos, 82mm Mortar Co, 45mm Gun Plat, HMG Co, Reconn Plat, Supply Plat, and Med Det.
Hqs and Service; Composed of 120mm Mortar Co, Reconn Co, AA MG Plat, Security Plat, Transp Co, and PPSH SMG Co.

Weapons: 21 Nov 50: 2nd Bn:
2 HMGs, 6 LMGs, 12 PPSH SMGs with 2 drums each, and rifles and 2 hand grenades per man. Rifle rds, about 200 per man.

5. FOREIGN ELEMENTS:
14 Jul 50: KANGDOK: Russ Advisor; Lt Col; 507 Brig.

6. WEAPONS:
16 Nov 50: KOCHAM; 4th Bn, 507th Brig: 2 LMGs
21 Nov 50: SONGJON: MUSAN: Security Bn: 250/M-1; turned in for Russ rifles.

7. UN PsW:
21 Nov 50: Saw 4 or 5 ROK soldiers on truck dressed in white near SONGJON. Identification acknowledged by capturing enemy Marine troops.
23 Nov 50: Heard 3 additional ROK soldiers being taken to rear areas.

8. EFFECTIVENESS OF FIRE:
PW states air strafing causes 50% of casualties. Mortar also effective.

9. CARE OF CASUALTIES:
Seriously wounded left on field due to lack of aid men and rapidity of retreat. Those rescued sent to MUSAN or HOERYONG on carts.

10. MORALE:
Most of recruits have no heart for war. 1/3 of NCOs have similar feeling. Officers will fight unto death, they say.

11. NK SENTIMENT:
People are waiting for entry of ROK troops. Have found to their dismay that they have been deceived.
