1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and gave information freely. Information seems reliable in view of his long tenure in the Army (since 1937). He was very observant throughout his military service and in good physical condition.
PW surrendered voluntarily to UN troops to whom he presented 3 safe conduct passes (No. 9001, 9002, 9003).
PW stated that his parents, his elder sister and a brother were killed by CCF troops while the PW was in the Nationalist Army.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army composed of the 38th, 48th, 49th and other Armies.
38th Army composed of the 113th Div and two other Divisions.
113th Div composed of 3 Regiments (337th, 338th and 339th).
337th Regt composed of 3 Bns.
3rd Bn composed of 4 Companies (1st, 2nd, 3rd and a HMG Co).
7th Co composed of 5 x Platoons: 3rd Inf Platoons, Weapons Plat and Svc Platoon.
Svc Platoon (PW’s Unit):
a. Personnel: 30 Officers and EM
b. Equipment and ammo:
5 Model 38 rifle (Jap) (50 rds per)
Grenades 6 per man
Remarks: Some personnel without weapons were used as food bearers, cooks, and other menial duties.
The Weapons Plat was composed of 3 Sqds.

300 GAZ trucks.

4. REMARKS:
PW stated that approx 300 trucks. (GAZ truck), believed to be from a Transportation Regt, came to KOREA with the 337th Regt of the 38th Army.
These trucks crossed a concrete bridge over the YALU River o/a 19 Oct 50. Trucks crossed the bridge in a single line, following the 2nd Bn. After the entire column of trucks crossed, the 3rd Bn (PW’s unit) followed.
Approx 100 x trucks loaded with food, 100 trucks with munitions (all weapons), 50 trucks with troops and 50 trucks with artillery pieces. The artillery pieces were drawn by horses from SSUPING (四平) to the Manchurian border and were loaded on trucks before they crossed the YALU River.
Approx 20 :miles into KOREA, the trucks were attacked by UN planes o/a 30 Oct 50. During the attack, approx 50 trucks loaded with troops and 50 trucks loaded with artillery pieces were destroyed by the strafing and bombing of 2 bombers and 4 fighter planes.
On 5 Nov 50, approx 100 trucks. loaded with food were destroyed by UN planes about 30 miles south of the first attack.
O/a 10 Nov 50, another group of approx 50 trucks (food and munitions) were destroyed by UN planes 10 miles south of the second attack. During the attack, approx 50 trucks (loaded with wounded), escaped the attack, fled north. After that the PW had never seen any trucks.
Higher echelons, unknown.
About 400 North Koreans, who came from MANCHURIA, were in the 38th Army. About 130 were used as interpreters. (one interpreter per company), The rest of the group was assigned to an investigation group and a propaganda group throughout the 38th Army units. PW did not know how many groups were assigned throughout the 38th Army.
These North Korean inspectors, whom the troops most feared, were used as secret agents. Their primary duties were to check movements and act ions of the CCF troops in KOREA.
The following were the three types of badges worn.

The PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command as it was prior to crossing the YALU.
Parts of the PW’s unit had never been integrated into Korean units.
Approx 50 truckloads of artillery pieces entered KOREA with the PW’s regiment, but he presumed that they were destroyed by UN planes which attacked them o/a 30 Oct 50. The vehicles were GAZ trucks.

5. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW stated that the entire 113th Div was in a defensive position on a mountain, digging foxholes when they were attacked.by UN troops at WADONG (PW’s word) o/a 15 Nov 50. He was captured by the 9th Inf Regt (US) after being separated from the 3rd Bn on 20 Nov 50 (south of WADONG).
O/a 15 Nov 50 when PW’s 3rd Bn was attacked, the 2nd Bn was located approx 2 km south of the PW’s unit and the 1st Bn was located approx 4 km north of the PW’s unit. PW believed that two other Bns were also attacked and disorganized during the battle.
The 334th, 335th and 336th Regts of the 112th Div, 38th Army, were located in the vicinity of the PW’s 113th Div o/a 15 Nov 50.

6. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted on 24 Jan 37 into the Nationalist Army (國民軍 東洋 警衛団) at NANKING (南京).
With the unit, the PW went to SHANGHAI (上海) on 14 Sep 37, remaining there about 5 months. PW remained with unit during following period: PW’s unit moved to WUHAN (武漢), remained until April 38; moved to HONAN-SHENG (湖南省), remained until June 38; moved to KUANG-CHOU (廣州), remained until Jan 40; moved to SZECHWAN SHENG (四川省), remained until Aug 41; moved to KUNMING (昆明), remained until Jan 42; moved to MIEN-TIEN (緬甸), remained until June 45; moved to SHUANG-CHIANG (湘江), remained until Jul 45; moved to FORMOSA (台泻), remained until Feb 47; moved to SHEN-YANG (瀋陽) and remained there until May 48; moved to CHANGCHUN (長春) and remained there until Sep 48; moved back to SHEN-YANG (瀋陽) where PW was captured by the 8th Route Army in Nov 48.
After being liberated, PW worked in a coal mine for approx 2 months.
In Jan 49, PW rejoined the Nationalist Army at HONAN-SHENG (湖南省) and was recaptured by the 8th Route Army at UN LIN (雲林) in Aug 49.
PW was assigned to the 4th Field Army, 38th Army, 113th Div, 337th Regt, 3rd Bn, 7th Co, 4th Plat, K.P. Sqd (4野戰軍 38軍 113師 337団 3營 7連 4排 炊事班) on 11 Aug 49.
Unit moved to HUNAN-SHENG (河南省) by foot in Jan 50.
In May 50, the unit moved to ANTUNG (安東) and remained approx 15 days; unit arrived at FENG-HUANG CHANG (鳳凰城) in June 50 and remained until Sep 50; unit moved to KAI-YUAN (開原) in Sep 50.
337th Regt departed from KAI-YUAN (開原), by train, d/u Nov 50 and arrived near the YALU River. From this point, the 337th Regt crossed the YALU River o/a 19 Oct 50.
No details were available on the point of entry and travels in KOREA because of the PW’s unfamiliarity with KOREA.
PW did not know whether the 38th Army participated in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

8. ARTILLERY:
Artillery: Refer to "Remarks" under T/O & E of the 337th Regt (number, caliber and type unknown).

9. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food: Troops of PW’s battalion carried 5 days ration when they crossed the YALU River o/a 19 Oct 50. Approx 100 trucks with food were destroyed by UN planes (mentioned in "Remarks" under T/O & E of the 337th Regt). After their rations were exhausted, they confiscated food from nearby villages as they advanced.
Ammo: Refer to "Remarks" under T/O & E of 337th Regt. Troops were issued an additional 50 rds of small arms ammo about 9 days after they crossed the YALU.

10. MORALE:
After safe conduct passes were dropped over the PW’s unit, the morale dropped very low because they believed they would receive good treatment if they become UN PsW. These safe conduct passes were especially welcomed by the former Nationalist troops. They picked up the leaflets on 13 Nov 50 (location unk).

11. SIGNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
One wireless and one field telephone were used between the Bn Hq and the Regimental Hq.
Runners were used between the Bn and the Company levels.
Flash light, bugle, 2 flags (red & blue), a signal gun (red, white & blue flares) were used by PW's Company.
Red flare signified a retreat; the white to engage the enemy, and the blue to advance, These colors were used permanently until the PW was captured on 20 Nov 50.

12. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service.
Troops of PW's unit did not receive any instructions to appear to be volunteer if captured.
PW never heard of the Iron and Steel Brigade.
There were no Japanese units in the CCF but PW observe approx 10 Japanese doctors in 113th Div Hq, who came with them from MANCHURIA.
This year (1950), about five times, the Chinese throughout the country were requested to volunteer. From June to Aug 50, all men from 28 to 34 were drafted into the CCF.
Pay Rate in CCF:
Pvt (戰士) - 60,000 Yuan
Plat Ldr (班長) - 110,000 Yuan
Co CO (連長) - 150,000 Yuan
The Chinese were recruiting in MANCHURIA; Manchurians and Chinese were drafted without discrimination or selection.
PW presumed that all former Nationalist soldiers captured by the CCF will. be conscripted into the CCF. Captured equipment in MANCHURIA was utilized by the CCF at the present war.
