1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and talked freely.
PW was in good physical condition,
Information is fairly reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army, 38th Army, 114th Div, 342nd Regt, 2nd Bn, HMG Co, 2nd Plat, 4th Sqd. (As of Aug 50)
PW stated that prior to entering KOREA his unit’s code name was (東安部 三大部 七支隊 二分隊扏 二小隊) TUNAN Section, 3rd Bn, 9th Branch Unit, 2nd Sqd, HMG Plat.
The 4th Field Army was composed of the 38th Army and other Armies.
The 38th Army was composed of the 114th Div and two other divisions.
The 114th Div was composed of the 342nd Regt and two other regiments.
The 342nd Regt was composed of 3 Battalions.
The 2nd Bn was composed of 4 Inf Companies and HMG Co.
The HMG Co was composed of 3 Platoons.
The 2nd Platoon was composed of 3 Squads (13 men per sqd).
2nd Platoon; HMG Co:
Personnel: Approx 40 officers & EM
Equipment & Ammo:
3 HMGs (2,000 rds per)
Grenade 2 per man
No other equipment
HMG Company:
Personnel: Appro x 200 officers & EM
Equipment & ammo:
Equipment other than mentioned previously.
3 x 82mm Mortar 3 (rds unknown)
Remark: There were 3 x 60mm Mortars, some M38 Rifles and 3 LMGs (rds unk) in each Inf Company.
2nd Battalion:
Personnel: Approx 700 officers & EM
Equipment & ammo:
No equipment other than mentioned previously.
4 North Korean interpreters in the 2nd Bn came with the Unit from MANCHURIA.
The PW's unit was intact and under the same chain of command as it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
PW’s unit had never been integrated into Korean units.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
Unit objective was unknown.
After entering KOREA on 28 Oct 50, the PW's battalion travelled only at night, sleeping in mountains during the day. They did not prepare any defensive positions during their travel.
On 16 Nov 50, the PW’s 4th Sqd and an Infantry Co (5th Co) of the 2nd Bn were attacked by UN troops (ROK). During this battle, the PW's unit was disorganized and retreated into the mountains. PW was captured alone.
PW believed that all the 2nd Bn units were in the vicinity at the time of his capture.
PW did not know what other units came to KOREA other than the 114th Div of the 38th Army.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted in Jan 48 into the Nationalist Army at KUANG-CHOU (廣州).
His unit fought against the 8th Route Army at HAINAN Island (海南島) and was captured by them in April 49.
With the 8th Route Army, the PW returned to KUANG-CHOU (廣州) and remained there unit 1 Jul 50.
From KUANG-CHOU they moved to KAIYUAN (開原) and remained there until 22 Oct 50.
PW was assigned to the 4th Field Army, 38th Army, 114th Div, 342nd Regt, 2nd Bn, HMG Co, 2nd Plat, 4th Sqd (4野戰軍 38軍 114師 342団 2營 扏梒連 2排 4班) at KAIYUAN (開原) in Aug 50. This was the same NCA unit that had surrendered to the CCF 8th Route Army at HAINAN Island in Apr 49. The PW stated that the entire 342nd Regt of the 114th Div departed from KAIYUAN (開原) by train on 22 Oct 50 and arrived at an unknown place in KOREA via TUNGHUA (通化) on 28 Oct 50.
Prior to crossing the YALU River, the code name of the PW’s unit was: TUN AN Section, 3rd Bn, 9th Branch Unit, 2nd Sqd, HMG Plat (東安部 三大部 九支隊 二分隊扏 二小隊).
The PW’s unit was stationed in KAIYUAN before it departed for KOREA.
PW believes that only the 114th Div of the 38th Army has come to KOREA.
PW did not observe any other CCF units.
PW stated that the 40th Army participated in the invasion of HAINAN Island; but PW's unit (38th Army) did not participate.
PW did not know whether any radar controlled artillery or any proximity fuses were used by the 40th Army.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of PW’s unit brought over 4 days ration across YALU River on 28 Oct 50.
After their rations were exhausted, they were fed corn and wheat in KOREA.
They received 1 issue of 2,000 rds of HMG Ammo per HMG when they departed from KAIYUAN (開原) on 22 Oct 50.
They had no received any more ammunition.

7. MORALE:
The morale of the PW's unit was low due to the lack of food and clothing, and constant UN air attacks.

8. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
A field telephone and runners were used in the Battalion Hq.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION:
Neither the PW nor his unit were volunteers for Korean service.
Troops (CCF) were never instructed to appear to be volunteers if captured.
The unit had no amphibious training.
PW did not know anything about the Iron & Steel Brigade.
There were no Jap units in the CCF.
Pay Rate: (38th Army):
Pvt (戰士) -- 55,000 Yuan
Sqd Ldr (班長) -- 55,000 Yuan
Plat Ldr (排長) -- 130,000 Yuan
PW did not know of any CCF units wlth Soviet equipment.
38th Army personnel were composed of former Nationalist soldiers (about 60%). Captured equipment was utilized by them in the present war.
The PW heard from a political officer that they must fight against UN troops in KOREA because the Nationalist. Army was once aided by the US in the CHINA War.
