2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a rice dealer prior to induction into the Chinese Nationalist Army. PW and one other surrendered to UN troops after reading a “Surrender Leaflet”. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted through a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese, and evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Not Recommended for further interrogation. Interrogated by 24th Div IPW Team 19 Nov 50.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at SUCHOU-FU (徐州府) Sep 47 and assigned to the 60th Army, 184th Div, 549th Regt. PW captured 1 Nov 48 at LIAOSISHENG, HEHSHANHSIEN (遼西省 黑山縣) by CCF, 39th Army, 117th Div, 351st Regt and was immediately assigned to the capturing unit. Dec 48, the entire 39th Army departed LIAOSISHENG and marched to TIENTSIN (天津). After training for four (4) months at TIENTSIN, the entire 39th Army departed for HUNAN-SHENG (湖南省) arriving at HUNAN in Jul 49. 39th Army then moved to HONAN (河南) arriving in Jan 50. At HONAN, the unit was engaged in farming for 7 months. The 39th Army departed HONAN in Jul 50 and travelled by train to SHENYANG (瀋陽) where the 39th Army received training for 2 months. On or about 31 Oct 50, the entire 39th Army entered KOREA from KUANTIEN (寬甸), crossing a concrete bridge over the YALU River in column of threes. The 39th Army arrived at TAECHON (YE1322) o/a 4 Nov 50 after marching through SAKCHU (XE8846) and KUSONG (XE9328). The 39th Army was deployed, in the hills near TAECHON. Units changed their locations frequently by marching an average of 40 km every night. On 18 Nov 50, PW and one other were in a defensive position but seeing an UN Unit nearby, they deserted their their position and surrendered to an UN Unit in vie of Hill 252 on 181000 Nov 50.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
The 39th Army consisted of the 115th, 116th, and 117th Divs and an Arty Div. The 117th Div consisted of the 349th, 350th, 351st Regts and an Arty Regt. The 351st Regt consisted of 3 Inf Bns and an Arty Bn. Each Inf Bn consisted of 3 Rifle Cos and a HW Co.

c. Equipment:
Rifle Co had 9 LMGs, 3 mortars (type unk), 18 SMGs, and U.S. and Jap M38 rifles. The HW Co was equipped with 4 mortars (81mm &82mm), 6 HMGs (U.S. make), 2 bazookas, and few rifles. Arty Bn had 4 mortars (type unk), 4 mountain guns (type unk), and 6 Inf guns (type unk).

d. Disposition:
At the time of PW’s desertion, PW's unit was in a defensive position in the vic of Hill 252 (YE3114). (18 Nov)

e. Knowledge of Other Units:
PW heard that the 38th, 40th, and 41st Armies have entered KOREA prior to the crossing of the 39th Army.

f. Personalities:
117th Div CG - CHANG, Chien-cheng (張見成)

g. Morale:
Approx 80% of the troops of the 117th Div are former Nationalist soldiers and that their morale is low due to constant air strikes and lack of ammo. PW also stated that he would not have surrendered if he did not see the "Surrender Leaflet". PW believes that the surrender leaflets will influence many to surrender.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was transported via ANTUNG. PW stated that his unit had never received any ammo supplies since coming to KOREA.
