2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was employed by various hospitals prior to entering the service. PW was cooperative and of above average intelligence. The information obtained is considered reliable, Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology.
PW was inducted into the NKA 14 Sep 50 at P’YONGYANG. 15 Sep 50, he was commissioned Sr Lt and assigned to 943rd Ind Unit, 23rd Field Hospital at CHUNGWHA (YD4305). 12 Oct 50, the unit departed CHUNGWHA and marched to UIJU (XE3050), arriving 26 Oct 50. 30 Oct 50, PW and two others (officers) deserted and went to SINUIJU, arriving same day. Three men hid there. 6 Nov 50, PW went to PIHYON (XE3830), arriving on same day. PW departed for CHOLSAN-GUN (XE4303) arriving 7 Nov 50, 8 Nov 50, PW started to work his way south, passing thru SONCH’ON (XE6505), KWAKSAN (XD7995), CHONGJU (XD9095), CHONGJON (YD0395), KASAN (YD1298) and arrived at YONGMIDONG (YD1693) 14 Nov 50. 14 Nov 50, PW and another officer surrendered to the YONGMI-DONG Security Police.

b. Equipment.
23rd Field Hospital had 2 trucks and 1 bus. X-rays and other medical equipment were mostly of Hungarian manufacture. Officers were armed with pistols and the security guards were armed with 1 LMG and 10 rifles.

c. Intentions.
PW stated that he heard. from a Jr Lt from his unit that the 943rd Ind Unit is to cross the border into MANCHURIA o/a 31 Oct 50.

d. Knowledge of Other Units.
Approx 500 mixed CCF and NK troops were stationed 20 km S of SINUIJU. PW observed 10 AA Guns (size unk) on 6 Nov 50 there.
PW observed approx 3,000 CCF troops at approx 4 km N of PIHYON (XE3830) on 6 Nov 50. Approx 30 men from the above group started to march north the same day.
PW also observed approx 6,000 CCF troops marching north 1 km S of PIHYON (XE3830) 6 Nov 50. When passing thru the city of SONCH'ON (XE6505), PW observed that the city was heavily guarded by CCF troops.

e. Communication.
PW stated that the CCF units leaves a round trail marker made of rope or rice straw when moving from one location to another.

g. Morale.
Morale of PW’s unit was low due to heavy bombardment by US Air Force and lack of food.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food Supply.
Food was procured daily by men of PW’s unit from farmers and villagers.

b. Replacements.
Approx 60 replacements were received by PW’s unit between the period 30 Sep 50 - 2 Oct 50.

c. NK Air Force.
On 31 Oct 50, PW observed 3 aircraft (possibly Recon Planes) landing at the SINUIJU Air Field. Markings were unobserved by PW at this time.

d. Foreign Advisors.
PW stated that there were approx 14 Hungarian Medical advisors in the 943rd Unit during the period 3 Aug 50 - 10 Sep 50. On 10 Sep 50, all advisors departed by truck to YANGBOK.

e. Activities.
PW stated that many NKs from ANJU Area were mobilized to dig monazite (phonetic) ore. This project was specially active during the year 1949. PW stated that he did not know what kind of ore it was but heard that they were found in river beds. All monazite ores were boxed and transported to RUSSIA.
