FIELD REPORT (2 - LDI - 0027) 15 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
a. Evaluation: PW was cooperative and answered all questions asked. However, PW was not familiar with the terrain and the disposition of his own unit. Information given considered reliable.

3. ORGANIZATION, STRENGTH AND DISPOSITION:
A. Own Unit
PW served with the Chinese Nationalist Army about a year prior to being drafted into the Chinese Communist Army Jan 50.
PW joined the 114th Div, 340th Regt (approx strength 2,000) in KAIWEN, MANCHURIA. The 114th Div left KAIWEN, MANCHURIA 3 Oct 50 by foot to the border.
13 Oct 50 the 114th Div and the 113th Div crossed the border about the same time. PW stated that all troops waded across the river. The depth of the water averaged 4 feet all the way across.
The crossing was made near MANP'OJIN.
The same day 114th Div left for TOKCHON from the crossing points. PW stated that the following day (14 Oct 50) the 113th Div took a different route elsewhere. PW has no knowledge of whereabouts of the 113th Div.
7 Nov 50 114th Div arrived in TOKCHON and established its Hqs in TOKCHON. The 340th Regt left for HICHON the following day. 9 Nov 50 340th Regt with the strength of 2000 men arrived in HICHON and established its Hq,
13 Nov 50 the 2nd Co of the 1st Bn, 340th Regt was ordered to attack the ROK forward CP, located on Hill 814 (BU5102), About 2200 hrs the 2nd Co with strength of 100 men was counterattacked by ROK Unit and the men scattered. Due to darkness PW ran into ROK Unit and was captured.

4. MISSION:
The 2nd Co of the 1st Bn, 340th Regt was to occupy Hill 814.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:
A. Food Supply
PW stated that after crossing the border into KOREA, due to UN aircraft harassing supply lines, food supplies were very low. Troops on the front line were fed twice daily but the amount is very little. PW stated the members of the 2nd Co did not receive food for 2 days when the unit went out on their mission to attack Hill 814.

B. Ammo
Ammo is also very low. Each rifleman carried about 100 rds.

C. Clothing
PW stated that a set of winter clothing was issued to all troops of the 114th Div prior to leaving KAIWEN, MANCHURIA. Since the cold weather arrived, PW observed some soldiers die due to lack of food and insufficient clothing.

B. MORALE:
Morale of all troops was high prior to crossing the border into KOREA. Immediately after the 114th Div crossed the border, the unit received aircraft attack practically every day. Due to heavy casualties, the morale began to drop.
About 18 Oct 50 PW's Company Commander, WANG Ju Ji, assembled his men and informed an troops, that food, ammo, clothing and other supplies are limited, therefore, we cannot keep on fighting in KOREA much longer. PW stated the fighting spirit of the men is very low.

C. Propaganda
PW has no knowledge of propaganda used in CCF units.
