ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 2595　8 December 1950

FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS - LDI - 0180)　20 November 1950

PsW were very cooperative, however, due to travelling at night in a strange country, PsW did not remember places or dates, therefore were unable to describe troop movements in detail. Information given was limited, but is considered reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

PsW as ammo bearers were formerly riflemen in the Chinese Nationalist army, serving from Feb 47 to Apr 50 on HAINAN Island, When the CCF seized the island, approx 1,000 men were conscripted into the CCF 40th Army and shipped to KAIYUEN, MANCHURIA, where PsW were assigned to the 38th Army.

O/a 22 Oct 50, PsW’s unit (342nd Inf Regt) departed KAIYUEN for N KOREA. Four hours after crossing a point, believed to be MANPOJIN, they arrived at an unknown place, on the morning of 28 Oct. Then the Regt travelled South for 3 days on the main road and arrived at an unknown location. From this location the unit travelled mountain trails for unknown number of days and arrived at vicinity of WOLBONG SAN o/a 13 Nov. On the morning of 16 Nov, their platoon and the 5th Co were ordered to defend hill 814 (BV5201). However, on 16 Nov, hill 814 was taken by UN forces, and the PsW were captured.

The 342nd Regt was composed of 3 Inf Bns. Each Bn was composed of 3 Inf Co’s and the 2nd Combined HMG and Mortar Co. Each Inf Co was composed of 3 Platoons and one 60am Mortar Plat. Each Plat was composed of 3 Rifle Sqds.

Second Plat consisted of 2 officers and 50 men. They had 50 M38 Jap rifles (200 rds per gun), 3 LMGs (500 rds per gun), 1 pistol, and 4 grenades per man.

The Second combined HMG and Mortar Co consisted of 160 men and 10 officers, and also 1 civilian (Kor). They lost four men and at present have only 156 EM. They have 119 M38 Jap rifles, 7 pistols; 6 HMGs (US), 3 (US) 81mm Mortars and 4 grenades per man.

Fourth Rifle Co consisted of 10 officers, 1 civilian (Kor), and 139 EM. They sustained no loss of equipment. Arms: 115 M38 Jap rifles, 9 LMGs (U3), 60mm (US) Mortars, 7 pistols and 4 grenades per man.

After arriving in N KOREA, all food was furnished by the NK farmers. Troops were rationed two meals per day.

Prior to departure, the troops were issued winter clothing; consisting of fur-lined caps, cotton padded coats and trousers, fur-lined shoes and a pair of socks.

PW claims that wireless was utilized for communication between Army and Div Hqs. Field telephones were utilized between Div and Regt and that runners accomplished communication between Regt and Co.

Prior to 161500 Nov 50, their Co was located on Hill 814 (BV5201) 2 km SW of WOLBONG SAN (BV5303) with the 2nd Bn Hq (strength 50) and the 4th Co (strength 150), The 6th Co (strength 150) was located 1 km NW of WOLBONG SAN. Future intention of the Bn was unknown.
