FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS - LDI - 0177) 20 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative, but was not well informed. Information was limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TO/E. DISPOSITION
a. OWN UNIT:
PW inducted 17 Jul 50, at CHANGNI-RI (BU-5835). In the No.2 Military Academy at P’YONG YANG from 20 Jul to 15 Aug 50. Upen completion PW and 20 other officers were assigned to 97th Ind Regt, at WOLLONG-MYON (YC-1212). Until 15 Oct 50, PW gave political indoctrination to the troops of 3rd Bn, HMG Co. (54 men).
16 Oct 50, 97th Regt was ordered by the Regt CO to retreat to SARIWON, because UN Forces were approaching the 38th parallel. During their retreat to SARIWON, unit was bombed by enemy aircraft at SINCH’ON (YC-1647) 161500I Oct 50. Due to this, the unit was scattered, PW and approximately 23 men headed for their homes. What happened to the rest of the 97th Regt’s troops, PW did not know, however, he believed they went to WOLLONG-MYON, because they could not go any further, since the UN Forces had already occupied SARIWON.
PW walked through mountain trails and roads for one month before he surrendered to the Security unit of TOGAM-NI.
When PW separated from the 97th Regt on 16 Oct 50 at SINCH ON, there were about 7,000 men. Of this group about 2,000 men were armed with various weapons. 3rd Bn (700 men) 300 Ml891/30 rifles plus 200 rounds per rifle, 36 - SMGs plus two 71 rounds drums per SMG, 3 LMGs, 1 × 60mm mortars, 30 shells, l × 45mm gun, 5 AT rifles, 10 pistols, and grenades.
PW stated food supply was received from Bn’s Supply Unit and the Bn in turn received it from the Regt’s Supply Unit, however, where the Regt received its supply was not known.
10 Oct 50, 97th Regt received their first winter clothing at WOLLONG-MYON. This supply was brought from P’YONGYANG by trucks. Clothing consisted of blue cotton padded uniforms, shoes, cap and winter underwear.
In PW’s Regt were two Russian make Jeeps, one was for the Regt CO and the other was for the two Russian advisors who were attached to the Regt (Rank Sr Lt). Last observation of these Russian officers was Sep 50.
The 97th Regt’s mission was to train the troops and later s end the troops to various units at the front. The length of training was about one month.

4. PERSONNEL:
PW stated that on 10 Oct 50, approx 3,000 replacements were received by tho 97th Regt. The average age of these troops were 30 years of age.

5. PERSONALITIES:
CO HMG Co: CHE, Gal Chong Pin (재갈종빈), Lt, age approximately 23.

6. MISCELLANEOUS:
a. ENEMY TACTIC:
PW stated that when advancing or during combat the infantry unit was at the front followed by Mortar Co, HMG Co, 45mm gun Plat, AT rifle Plat, Medical Plat, Supply Plat and Hq.

b. MORALE:
The morale of the 97th Regt was low because they were losing the. war and they did not have the will to fight.

c. PROPAGANDA:
The effect of US leaflets on the troops of the 97th Regt was unknown because they were not allowed to see or read the leaflets. The officers were able to read the leaflets but only a few believed the statements written on the leaflets.
