2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was of average intelligence, and fairly cooperative. Expressed desire to join Chiang KAI SHEK’s Nationalist Force because he is a great “admirer” of Chiang.
Reliability - fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Nov 43: Inducted into CNA at HONAN-SHENG (河南省) and attached to tho “YEN HSI SHAN” Army (閻錫山) (61st Army, 48th Div Special Co) as orderly. 61st Army was located in SHANSI-SHNG PU HSTEN (蒲縣) on area still under CNA control.
Mar 45: Discharged from CNA (older brother was company commander) and engaged in farming at, place of birth.
Sep 46: Inducted into Peace Preservation Unit, a group of 2,000, to guard (武陟縣) WUCHIH-HSIEN, HON AN-SHENG (Home).
May 47: CCF guorrilla units invaded HONAN-SHNG from SHANSI-SHENG and PW was captured and inducted into WICHIH HSIEN Ind Bn, 2nd Co (CCF) immediately. A guerrilla Bn of approx 400 mon, this unit skipped from place, to place in his home area raiding the Nationalist troops.
Jun 49: PW’s unit was absorbed by HONAN SHENG HSINHIANG. (SINSIANG) (新鄕縣) Guard, 2nd Regt and became 2nd Bn. PW became Plat Ldr. The reorganization was done as soon as the CCF 4th Field Army, 45th Army took over the area, defeating tho CNA 40th Army.
Aug 50: PW’s unit (2nd Regt) was absorbed by 66th Army and became 586th Regt of 196th Div. PW assigned to 1st Bn, 2 Co, 2 Plat as Plat Ldr. Unit stationed TIENTSIN.
22 Oct 50: 66th Army entrained for ANTUNG, MUKDEN-SHENG.
27 Oct 50: After a one-day stay, unit walked across YALU River at night.
O/a 4 Nov 50: Arrived SON CHON (XE 6506).
O/a 9 Nov 50: Arrived NAMSI (XE 9128). Unit rested for two weeks.
25 Nov 50: Captured during his first battle.

Unit Organization and Strength (24 Nov 1950):
196 Div - 10,000 troops, composed of 586th, 587th and 588th Regt.
586th Regt - 2,500 troops - 3 × Inf Bns (1st, 2nd, and 3rd); 1 × Heavy Mortar Co; 1 × Hq Guard Co; 1 × Special Troop Co (Signal, Recon and Telephone).
1st Bn -650 troops - 3 Cos and 1 mixed company. 1st Bn Mixed Co - 150 troops. 1st Bn, 2nd Co - 140 troops.

Equipment (As of 24, Nov 1950):
1st Bn, 2nd Co 6 × LMG (Czech); 3 × “60” mm Mortar (CNA); 3 × Bazooka (US) plus 1O0 rockets. 1st Bn, mixed Co - 6 × HMG (water cooled); 3 × “82” mm mortar.
O/a 20 Oct 1950, 196th Div (at TIENTSIN) turned in old and worn out “38” and all “79” model rifles and received serviceable “38” model rifles.
Old “79” model LMG wore exchanged for second-hand Czech LMG.
Jap HMGs were replaced by Russian water-cooled HMG.
Bazookas were issued o/a 24 Nov 1950 at NAMSI (XE 9128).

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
Former Unit Location:
196th. Div was stationed in Japanese Army barracks in the (Former) French Settlement approx 3 km East of the TIENTSIN RR Station. A huge army reservation was found here housing the whole division.

Recruiting Program:
An incomplete recruiting program was started in many HSIENS in August 1950. Those men, between the ages of 18-35 were drafted and trained in their own HSIEN and sent home until further notice. Whether these (new soldiers) were incorporated into the CCF Army or not was unknown. 66th Army did not receive any new or old soldiers after Aug 1950. Each Regt released 20 old and sick soldiers in Sep 1950.

Tanks:
O/a 1 Oct 50 a (National Liberation Day) parade was held in TIENTSIN in which the 66th Army participated.
10 tanks (30 tons) also participated. These tanks were said to be part of the 20th Army Group.

Captured Nationalist Troops:
Former WUCHIH-HSIEN Peace Preservation Unit (武陟縣), in HONEN-SHENG a 2,000 man group was captured by CCF guerrilla troops in Aug 47, and reorganized into 43rd and 45th Ind Regts. These units were later absorbed by the 2nd Field Army.

Propaganda;
According to the Co Culture Officer, CHINA has to intervene for three reasons:
For World Peace.
Defend their homeland.
Help N KOREA.
The above was taught to the men after they came to KOREA.
