FIELD REPORT (25 Div - LDI - Unnumbered) 13 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE Chong Ki (리총기)

PW taken prisoner by Peace Preservation Unit, SONDO-DONG (Vic BT9704) 10 Nov 50.

May 1950:
Appointed chairman ANSING-DONG Communist all located vic TOGAN-NI (BT9639) all consisted of 35 members including 2 females. (6 of these members joined NKA June - July 1950.

15 July 1950:
Formally joined North Korean Communist Party.

Mid October:
Joined guerrilla units under leadership of LEE Hong Gu. This unit originally formed with 8 men. O/a 8 November 21 NKA stragglers joined unit. The 8 men comprising the original unit are as follows:
1. LEE Hong Gu (리헝구), age 29, chairman of KUI-MYON (BT9535) Korean Communist Party Coll, about 5′3″, 125 lbs, pale complexion, slender build, protruding forehead, wears hair long, graduated grammar school plus 3 years private tutor.
2. KU Chung T’ae (고정태), age 28, vic chairman KUI-MYON cell, about 5′5″, stout build, round face, long hair, dark complexion.
3. LEE Hung Un (리흥운), age 30, chairman HAPTON-MYON cell, about 5′5″, medium build, ruddy complexion, very long hair.
4. LEE Hing Ung (리힝웅), age 29, vice chairman HAPTON-MYON cell, 5′1″, slender build, round face, pale complexion, very long hair.
5. HUNG Mun Song (흥문성), age 37, chairman Peoples Committee TOSAN-MYON (CT1038), 5′6″, slender build, oval face, dark complexion. Fairly short hair.
6. HAN Yon Kyu (한연규), age 31, chairman TOSAN-MYON Communist Party Cell. 5′1″, husky build, light complexion, medium length hair.
7. LEE Ch’ong Nak (리청낙), age 29, vice chairmen TOSAN-MYON cell, 5′5″, medium build, long face, light complexion.
8. LEE Ch‘ong Gi (리총기), ago 27, chairman ANSING-DONG cell located at TOGAN-NI (BT9639).

Mission of Unit:
The mission of the unit was to cellect information regarding strength, location, equipment, movement and armament of UN Forces; information regarding strength, location of Peace Preservation Units (CHIAN TAI), information regarding locations of food, arms, ammunition and clothing. This information was given to NKA units in their area.

On 8 November:
At 0700 PW left the guerrilla hqs at SURYONG-SAN (BT1031) to go to MUNGBONG-DONG (vic BT9737) and reconnoiter UN Forces. He was instructed to return to hoqs by 2400 that day. If he failed to return by 2400 he was told that he (PW) would be presumed dead, missing or taken prisoner and that hqs would immediately move to PUAP-SAN (CT2839). PW captured at 1100 on 10 November 1950.

155 Unit:
PW states a unit known as 155 unit was reorganized vic TUSAN-MYON (CT1238) o/a 29 Oct 50, strength l,000. This unit is composed principally of stragglers. All are armed. There are a few SMG’s. PW saw 2-LMGs. He saw no mortars or HMGs. Sr Col LEE Mun Sun is the commanding officer. PW heard that 155 was located UBONG-MYON (BT8933) area 10 Nov 50.

On 8 November:
Guerrilla unit was joined by 21 NKA personnel from remnants of a 214 Unit. This group was led by a man who claimed to be a Sr Col. His name is HONG Mun. Sil, age about 42. There were two Jr Lts and 4 M/Sgts in the new group. The guerrilla unit is now commanded by Sr Col.

On 9 November:
LEE Hong Gu made a speech to the unit which is as follows: “We must continue to fight oven under the present adverse conditions. In a short while Communist CHINA, and then RUSSIA Would send aid and enable the NKA to go back to South KOREA to ultimate victory. We must gather the stragglers together to strengthen our forces. Our present duty is to conserve our strength for the day when help arrives. We will attack small groups of enemy if the possibility of success lies heavily in our favor. We will hide from larger enemy forces by going into mountains unusable to vehicles.”

On 10 November:
PW heard from LEE Hong Gu that estimated 1,500 stragglers of either 8th Army or 8th Div, does not remember, located PUAP-SAN (CT2839) area.
PW’s wife CHO San Yao, age 25, with 2 children living at KUM-CHON-GUN, KUI-MYON, MUNSAN-NI, MUNGBONG (ET9737).
PW states they accomplished a few missions of reporting information to local NKA units. He states they do not send agents north. Any information is taken by LEE Hong Gu personally to local NKA unit.
PW states he was on his 3rd reconnaissance mission when captured.
From times of organization in mid October to o/a 8 Nov 50 they carried on with the original 8 members.

Additional Information on 8 Nov 50:
PW heard from 6 persons listed #2 through #7 that 13 American PW had been captured and 12 of them were killed on 6 Nov 50 vic TOGAN-NI by elements of 155 Unit and the 6 members of the guerrilla unit. 1 PW was said to have escaped. PW heard that the commanding officer of 155 Unit, Sr Col LEE Mun Sun, aged about 40, was the person responsible as he was the commanding officer at the scene.
