FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0110) 17 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted his unit vic YONGSAN DONG (YE3O12) 12 Nov 50. Captured 14 Nov 50. PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Information obtained considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology: PW conscripted 20 Sep 50 and Assigned to the 105th Div at OBONGNI. 2nd Bn, 1st Regt, was formed by men from SEOUL and other South Koreans. 2nd Bn was activated vic OBONGNI 20 Sep 5o. After remaining there for approx 10 days 2nd Bn departed for SAKCHU via PAKCHON and KUSONG. Unit arrived in SAKCHU on or about 2 Nov 50. 1st and 3rd Bn were already in SAKCHU. 1st Regt advanced southward and on 10 Nov 50 arrived CHANG DONG-NI (YE2404 vic PAKCHON. 2nd Regt located approx 1 mile W of 1st Regt. 11 Nov 50 PW observed 2nd Regt suffered air strikes and arty shelling. PW heard that heavy casualties were inflicted. 12 Nov 50 1st and 2nd Regts retreated N. PW deserted. Destination of unit unknown. No knowledge of 3rd Regt.
b. PW’S Unit: 105th Div composed of 3 regiments, 3 battalions in each regiment.
Composition of Battalion: 3 Infantry Companies: 300 men, AT Plat: 30 men, Signal Plat: 25 men. Medical Plat: 20 men.
c. Weapons: Inf Co: 9 LMG’s, 3 HMG’s, rifles, AT Plat: 7 - 8 AT rifles. Signal Plat: No weapons or signal equipment.
PW observed 4 tanks approx 1 mile 3 of PAKCHON 9 Nov 50. Also heard other tanks in the vicinity, but could not determine number of tanks. Div. PW did not know if tanks belonged to the 105th Div.
Morale: Morale of men in PW’s Bn very low. PW stated that his Bn is composed of South Korean conscripts. Majority willing to surrender or desert if opportunity arose.
Land Mines: Numerous mines were laid on the main road leading NE out of PAKCHON. Especially between CHANGDONG-NI (YE2404) and PYONGIMON (YE2506.)
US PWs: Overheard numerous US PsW were held at UNSAN (YE3928) Grammer School. Number unknown.
